Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by mightyram

Since my earliest days I used to construct my top 100 singles charts and always shied away from doing top 100 albums- it was just something too difficult to get my head around. Judging a series of tracks, some of which I could love, some so-so, some I might not really like. How did I come to terms with this? Some albums I love but dare not play too often, while others are for certain times, moods, environments, etc.
I decided last year that I had to come to terms with this conundrum and set about developing MY system.
Basically, the top rated album in my charts has the most brilliant tracks, while lower down they may be a combination of load of really good tracks rather than brilliant, or a mixture of brilliant and ok, or not so good. What makes the individual tracks brilliant, good, ok etc- well loads of things, history, memory, what it makes you feel, think ,do etc. We all have albums we love, but some of these have the odd track that we skip, because it does not 'do it. feels out of place etc. It is these albums that can' t atop my chart. Every track and the whole rounded set gets top spots for me.
The whole thing is still development and liable to change and hopefully as I complete some comments on the individual albums some of my ramblings will makes sense to some. Cheers

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.0/100, a mean average of 79.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 14.9.

Thank you for your kind words on my chart (back in October). Your chart is great and is full of artists and albums we share. I love Genesis' Trick of the Tail, definitely one of their best albums in the whole catalogue. I also like your variety of albums from the 1970s and from the 1990s.

Good start. Like to see Ian Dury. I´m not convinced of "Alone With Everybody". It`s a nice album, but for me not more than that. You certanly have special reminiscence of it.
