He's a little tinker, isn't he, Beck? Not many people can segue seamlessly from mock hip-hop to Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and get away with it. The breadth of his musical appreciation is astounding, and while elsewhere he can be reflective and pensive, here he's not afraid to let his hair down, have a laugh and a dance. Not as prolific as Bowie, but sharing his chameleon-like ability to blend with the trends and then abruptly buck them. He's not a follower.

A genre-defining album - trip-hop - emerging from the eponymous suburb of Bristol and the same stable as Massive Attack, this is so much an album of its dystopian time that I wondered if it could survive it without dating horribly. Happily, it has, which is more than can be said of some of its contemporaries. Beth Gibbons said that she's not nearly as much of an emotional car crash in real life as she sounds on record - she just seems to tap into that fragile desperation when she's singing. Well, I'm very glad for her that this is true - but I'm also glad that she manages to convey pain that is one step away from madness in a way that the rest of us, whether or not we've been there, can relate to. Not forgetting the majestically splintered musical backdrop.

It's just plain eerie how much like his dad Jeff Buckley sounds, considering he barely knew him; even more eerie that, like his dad, he died so young. What we might have heard from him had he lived is sadly moot, though if anybody could record from beyond the grave it's him, with his angelic four-octave voice and profoundly spiritual sensibility. Not exactly a pleasure, this - more like a exquisite pilgrimage. And what an extraordinarily wide spectrum of influences - I mean, Benjamin Britten to Elkie Brooks, for Heaven's sake! (Well yes, quite likely, if such a Heaven exists - he's probably there now. . .)

I seem to have a slight penchant for debut albums, judging by my picks: and anybody reviewing my charts might be surprised at this choice. The boot's definitely on the other foot here, as far as sex-rock is concerned - not many singers, male or female, have been as explicit as Liz Phair gets on 'Flower'; elsewhere, though, she claims she just "wants a boyfriend". Well, it's her prerogative to change her mind, and she manages to travel between love and lust with aplomb. I think it's called "beating 'em at their own game".

Sheryl Crow was turned 30 when she became an overnight sensation with this debut, named in honour of the very club where she cut her musical teeth. When I heard the first UK single 'What I Can Do For You' it sounded so accomplished I thought she'd been around for years and I'd just missed her; six months later she was all over the radio with the smash 'All I Wanna Do' as cult status gave way to universal acclaim. Deservedly, in this case, I think you'll agree. Half the tracks became hit singles and the other half could have - yet it still sounds fresh and rootsy, with that nice combination of rock and soul in her voice that lifts her above the crowd. Perhaps, like some of the other successful debuts in my chart, it became an albatross for her; she never quite topped it.

Another overnight sensation that took years to materialise, Pulp's paean to that "different class" from which both they and I emerged captures that moment in time when 'Cool Britannia' was beginning to rule the waves, serving both as a reflection and a reminder that not everyone was included in this "new dawn" that was about to be heralded by our great leader, with its "Year in Provence" with which Jarvis Cocker told us memorably what we could do. (Wonder what he thought of Sainsbury's at the time?) You can't take it away from them, though: they captured the frustration, angst, anger and hope of a class who "weren't supposed to be here", whom society didn't know what to do with, and who wanted "the things they won't allow us". I don't begrudge them for taking some of them - but it takes more than a great album to spark a revolution, especially against this shower of. . . But it IS a great album.
