Another overnight sensation that took years to materialise, Pulp's paean to that "different class" from which both they and I emerged captures that moment in time when 'Cool Britannia' was beginning to rule the waves, serving both as a reflection and a reminder that not everyone was included in this "new dawn" that was about to be heralded by our great leader, with its "Year in Provence" with which Jarvis Cocker told us memorably what we could do. (Wonder what he thought of Sainsbury's at the time?) You can't take it away from them, though: they captured the frustration, angst, anger and hope of a class who "weren't supposed to be here", whom society didn't know what to do with, and who wanted "the things they won't allow us". I don't begrudge them for taking some of them - but it takes more than a great album to spark a revolution, especially against this shower of. . . But it IS a great album.

While I can't accept that this album belongs in the same company as OK COMPUTER or even KID A, it still knocks spots off most of its contemporaries. It owes much to producer Nigel Godrich knocking a few heads together and banishing them to the studio on orders not to come out until they'd stopped bickering and produced something listenable. I think they managed something a bit better than that; and while I don't know if it suggested in anyone's mind that they'd go on to conquer the world, it certainly did announce the arrival of a superior rock band. But it is a rock album, full of grandstanding guitar and doom-laden lyrics, with only hints of the sonic experimentation that would later take centre stage - but undoubtedly a class act.
