A genre-defining album - trip-hop - emerging from the eponymous suburb of Bristol and the same stable as Massive Attack, this is so much an album of its dystopian time that I wondered if it could survive it without dating horribly. Happily, it has, which is more than can be said of some of its contemporaries. Beth Gibbons said that she's not nearly as much of an emotional car crash in real life as she sounds on record - she just seems to tap into that fragile desperation when she's singing. Well, I'm very glad for her that this is true - but I'm also glad that she manages to convey pain that is one step away from madness in a way that the rest of us, whether or not we've been there, can relate to. Not forgetting the majestically splintered musical backdrop.

It's just plain eerie how much like his dad Jeff Buckley sounds, considering he barely knew him; even more eerie that, like his dad, he died so young. What we might have heard from him had he lived is sadly moot, though if anybody could record from beyond the grave it's him, with his angelic four-octave voice and profoundly spiritual sensibility. Not exactly a pleasure, this - more like a exquisite pilgrimage. And what an extraordinarily wide spectrum of influences - I mean, Benjamin Britten to Elkie Brooks, for Heaven's sake! (Well yes, quite likely, if such a Heaven exists - he's probably there now. . .)
