Top 35 Greatest Music Albums
by Happy

If you think that I have too many albums from the same artist, let it be known that I personally don't like the idea of only having one album per artist. The reason why is because I feel that some bands can't be defined by just one album, like the Beatles. So I will only list albums that I consider "definitive", ones that, when combined, while give you a good idea of what a band's greatest sounds are in each era. The album also has to be good enough to make the list. I'll also try to keep it at 2 tops if at all possible.

Means more to me than any other album here. Manages to do so many things that other albums failed to do, all in just under 35 minutes. It's shows beauty through complexity at times and simplicity at other times. It makes the listener feel both uneasy and at ease. It brings both pleasure and disgust. It's fun some of the time and serious at other times. Most of all, it's totally honest. Personally, it reminds me of life itself. [First added to this chart: 07/27/2013]

Nothing like Quadrophenia will ever be made again, or at least it's highly unlikely. For starters, concept albums, let alone rock operas, are not that common in music. Second, this is arguably the most talented group of rock musicians ever assembled. Roger Daltrey is one of the greatest singers, Keith Moon one of the greatest drummers, John Entwistle one of the greatest bassists, and Pete Townshend is an underrated guitarist, along with being an amazing songwriter. Timeless without a doubt. [First added to this chart: 06/11/2013]

When I first heard "Neighborhood #1" I was disappointed, but when I finally heard the whole album I realized it was a great song, along with everything else here. The only problem I have with it is the drumming. For some reason I feel like its way too generic. Other than that, solid throughout. [First added to this chart: 07/31/2012]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.8/100, a mean average of 83.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 82.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.1.

What you said reminds me of "Colma" by Buckethead, which is mostly acoustic, whereas his other albums are primarily electric. I liked a few songs on the album and I plan on giving it a full listen. I'll also try out those other albums you mentioned.

17 albums in common. It's a good consistent chart. But it's so predictable. If you're looking for a recent album with "sonic impact" try 'Lonerism' by Tame Impala or 'Bloom' by Beach House.

It's a different kind of "sonic impact" to what you have in your chart as they're both laid back psychedelic/indie but they are ambient and hit you with many crescendos and unexpected twists. I would seriously recommend them and they would open up a new dimension of listening for you.

Still, nice chart, if a bit basic.

Not a bad start, interesting to see where it goes! If you're looking for "modern indie recs" still, try The Papersons, The Airborne Toxic Event, or White Lies. Given your chart, I think you'll like at least one of the three.

I appreciate your remark, JMan It's just that I always see people say "oh this list is boring/shitty because it has 5 beatles albums on it" so I try to limit myself to allow for other albums to get in. Btw expect some major changes to this list as I haven't updated it in forever.

Pinkly Smooth is a side project for the drummer and lead guitarist from Avenged Sevenfold, but they sound nothing like them if you ask me. It's like taking Mr. Bungle, Queen, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, ska, metal, and Nightmare Before Christmas and smashing them together all at once. They only released one album, Unfortunate Snort, and it's about a half hour long, with six songs. It's kind of like a shorter version of the White Album, but in a different genre. Most of the songs are 4 minutes long, with one 7 minute song, but each of them have a lot in them. The production is crap and sometimes the singer sounds funny, but I just love this album. The production, while not great, sounds natural, I love how the piano is used frequently, the drumming and guitar work are great, I love how crazy it sounds (the end of one song goes into a country style at the end for no reason other than it can), I think the songwriting is great, and I learn something new every time I listen to it. I probably won't do it justice with this comment, so you'll have to listen to it. I should warn you that you'll either love it or hate it with a passion, but it might take a few times to sink in. Try listening to Mezmer first, since that's the most well known song by them. Lastly, you can't buy it anymore, so you'll have to either get it through questionable means or listen to it off of youtube. The song order is on the album page.

Nothing wrong with this chart at all... Who's gonna criticize it harshly? Good stuff.

Who the hell are Pinkly Smooth?
