As of this year, OK Computer has been my favourite album for a decade. That's crazy to think about. In that entire time, I think that Mellon Collie, Pet Sounds, and - maybe - To Pimp a Butterfly have been the only albums that I've even considered might challenge it. Every time, though, I quickly shut that down. Every time I return to this album, I have a little voice in the back of my head that says, "okay, here's where you find the flaws." And yet, every time, that doesn't happen. Everything about this is Radiohead firing on all cylinders flawlessly. This has the best set of lyrics Thom Yorke has ever put on a record, some of the band's best and most energetic playing, several of their absolute best songs - Climbing Up the Walls, No Surprises, Let Down, Karma Police, and Paranoid Android are all S-tier Radiohead, with the rest of the album sitting in the A- or upper B-tiers at worst - and a total cohesion that is absent from their first two records and never quite matched by anything that came after it. It kinda feels strange that this is so solidly the site's overall #1, as this is a quirky, weird, long, dense record...but I think that's part of the miracle of OK Computer. It just yanks you into it from that first distorted guitar note in Airbag to the final triangle note in The Tourist.

This is not something that human beings are capable of. I don't think there will ever be a more moving, more beautiful, more impeccably composed 36 minutes of music than can be found on Pet Sounds. It's absolutely bonkers that this was ever floating around the bottom, let alone the immediate exterior, of my top 10: if there is ONE perfect album in the world, one which I have not a single criticism of a single moment of, then you're looking at it. This has God Only Knows on it, and it's debatable whether or not that's even the best song here. I rest my case.

A two-hour rock opera that puts all of its peers to shame. Billy Corgan turns the story of falling in love and drifting apart into an epic poem that could be the soundtrack of the greatest romance film ever made, if such a film were made around it. This is, overall, the best usage of the electric guitar ever captured on tape. The way that Billy Corgan turns that instrument into an orchestra of its own is something that he began to experiment with on Siamese Dream, but blew into the stratosphere here. Is Mellon Collie flawless? Is every song a 10/10? No, but none of the 28 songs are subpar either, and when a song on here hits, it HITS. This might not quite be the greatest album ever made, but it's certainly the GRANDEST album ever made.

It feels impossible to do proper justice to What's Going On with mere words. It's really easy to laud the social commentary, the prescient production techniques, the all but flawless performances all around but particularly from Marvin, the evocative lyrics that put Marvin right up there alongside the other great American songwriters...all of that is true of this album but saying it feels like such a surface level, almost vapid distillation of what What's Going On achieves. More than being sent on a musical journey, this album transports you to a mentality and a particular period in American history, after Fred Hampton, before Watergate. Long after the Great Depression, long before the Great Recession. And it feels like Marvin knew the American Dream was going to terminally crumble whether it took years or took decades. What's Going On isn't as potent as it was when it came out; it's tenfold more.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 17% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.3/100, a mean average of 87.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.5.

Great top 100 albums!! Heavy on The Bruce, love a few of them myself, although he doesn't crack my 100. Anyway...like the descriptions and keep delaying to add my own.

Not sure how much this is the finished articled (since you've put this as under construction) but a great mix of albums nonetheless. Some notes to your favourites would be really interesting to see!

Great list. We have pretty similar taste. Love the variety of albums here. The only thing I don't love is the somewhat lack of '80s albums.

I expected more Canadian albums tbh. A really cool list tho, and the descriptions are so kick ass! Shame there isn't more of them, but a nice list dude. Galapagos-Porcelina and Zero-To Forgive are some of the best track groups that I've ever listened to. Also nice to see Dream Theater, and the Rush choice is very cool, maybe my fav by them right now. Solid jazz choices too!
