With an undying power and multilayered melodies, Rooney sets out to be Weezer of the new millennia. Their debut album is a largely successful attempt at reinventing the catchy, radio-friendly power-pop that Weezer has made famous on their Blue and Green albums, in particular. Sure, lots of the songs on the record sound very similar, like the band only wrote one melody and changed the lyrics, but the catchy guitar riffs and sing-along choruses still make the album absolutely fantastic.

Melodic, rhythmic and incredibly infectious, Biffy Clyro's Only Revolutions is the most polished, mainstream and stylistically coherent album the band has released so far. The album is highly energetic and filled with happiness, focusing on guitar hooks and staccato rhythms as well as sing-along choruses. This is Biffy Clyro made for the big arenas.

You know you're in for an interesting ride when the intense opening moments of Biffy Clyro's Puzzle offer something rarely heard on LPs these days. It's a unique style, taking listeners directly into the new style of music the band has adopted. This is the majestically melodic and straightforward band most people know Biffy Clyro as.

On their debut album, The Killers prove that new wave-influenced post-punk is alive and kicking. Listening to this album now, 16 years after its initial release, shows that it has stood the test of time incredibly well. The recognizable guitar riffs, Brandon Flowers' echoing singing voice and the old-school production are just as fascinating now as back in the day.

2004's Lifeblood is a sweet, melodic and mostly harmless album. It marks a clear departure both from the harder rock sound present on most previous records by the band and the synth-rock oriented music that defined the band's sound in the late 90s. Some would call this lifeless and watered down, and even though it doesn't hit as hard as the band's best albums, the band still hasn't lost their ability to write great hooks and memorable choruses.

Okay, look, Make Believe isn't the alt-rock, power-pop, nerdy college rock music we've come to expect from Weezer after their four first records, but it has a soft spot in my heart. This album marks a complete tonal shift for the band, ditching the loud guitars and the youthful energy for a very mainstream, radio-friendly pop-rock with very little personality, structure or variation and loads of generic chord progressions and annoyingly catchy choruses. But I love it.

On Antics, NYC based rock band Interpol refine their moody post-punk sound. They no longer sound like the depressing midnight band they did on their debut, but even in their lighter, more radio-friendly approach, they manage to sound dark and anxious. This time focusing on a wider variety of melodies and instrumentation, Interpol largely fixes the issues that troubled their first album.

By The Way kicks off RHCP's new decade of mainstream success, following their critically successful era in the 90s. Encouraged by the wisely successful Californication album, the funk-rock act stays safely on the melodic, radio-friendy alternative rock ground, with minor funk and rap-rock influences.
