I first got into Big Thief in 2019 with the releases of UFOF and Two Hands. I was more impressed with the latter (especially the single "Not") and it inspired me to check out the rest of their discography. At the time, I found Big Thief to be a very solid band but not one I went back to very often. That started to change with the release of Adrianne Lenker's solo album "songs" in 2020. I loved the way that album flowed, and the more stripped back instrumentals left room for Lenker's unique voice to really shine. I was excited to see if the band's next album could similarly move me.
Two years later and I was pleasantly surprised to find that Lenker and company had surpassed themselve once again. "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You" blew me away with its creativity, emotional lyrics, and lush instrumentation. There are so many unique sounds and genres mixed together here without ever getting in the way of the album's flow, an especially impressive feat given the two hour run time. In fact, the album goes by so smoothly that it feels about half that length. In my mind this is an instant classic that finally pushed me from just liking to absolutely loving Big Thief.
