Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by II

Thank you for entering this page 🙏
II welcome you to my "Top 100 Greatest Music Albums" chart: 🌝

II've been working on this chart for a long time, as II wanted it to have almost all the albums II had thought that would enter in it, so II hope you would enjoy observing my chart, discover some albums from it, and share your thoughts about it. 🌝
_________________________________________________________

;SPOILERS;

Once II discovered Vocaloid music, many albums of that scene have occupied my top 10 by storm, so once you see the next entries, perhaps my selections would feel more varied.

Writing summaries for all albums has sometimes been quite a difficult task to perform, and II wish II could write one for all entries, although sometimes II cannot think of what to write, so II hope to perhaps finish this task in the future, even if it will take a long time to do so.

Many of my entries are by Japanese artists, since for me, their works are more energetic, melodic and technical than other countries.
II wonder what would BEA users think about this, since general music forums are usually Anglospheric, so II hope you'll like observing my uncommon album selections.

II usually like more modern music, as the variety of sounds, productions and genres is inexhaustible, so many of my entries in this chart were released since the 90's, and while there are a few more albums from the 70's and a bit less from the 80's, there is only one album from the 60's, which is a decade several users are fond of (and the other decades too).

"Maximum Security" is my first accessible Neoclassical Metal album, which is probably one of the most important ones in the genre.
_________________________________________________________

- The album -

The music is completely instrumental (no vocals), which is something II tend to prefer, since if II classify a human voice as an instrument, II find it less thrilling than an electric guitar (with/out effect pedals), a piano, a violin, even some synthesizers etc.
When there is no singer, there are more opportunities to compose more technically expressive melodies with the instruments II mentioned earlier, therefore, Maximum Security along other albums can offer what II'm looking for.

While the tracks on the album focus on virtuosity and feature a good use of modulations (accompanied by key changes), which all give a lot of life to the music, there is also a large focus on consonance! Which means the notes and chords don't have intervals which are dissonant, which are scientifically described as less pleasant to the ears. There are some exceptions though, since music is subjective (Other people prefer some dissonances), but consonance has been a very important component in music II kept returning listening to, and virtuosity is the golden spice which enriches the experience!

All the technical aspects Tony displays in the compositions in this album are due to Frédéric Chopin being one of his musical influences, who had used these techniques in his work too and was probably one of the first in whole musical history who has intermingled virtuosity with consonance so audibly ethereally!
_________________________________________________________

- Summary & backstory -

II like this album a lot! II wanted to discover music with distorted guitars and consonant & virtuosic melodies after II listened to the video-game soundtracks of "Lords of Thunder", "Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire" & "Total Eclipse (3DO)" (these soundtracks have never gotten an official audio release, hence, cannot be rated on BEA), and after listening to Toshinori Hiramatsu's extraordinary works, II searched for the best albums of the neoclassical metal genre by customizing a top neoclassical metal albums chart on RYM and found out "Maximum Security" and it has maximally secured me a tonally alpine ride at Mach speed ever since!

It has some of the most perfect music II could ask for! Tony has truly created something special!

Throughout my whole musical voyage, II never thought II could find the perfect artist with the perfect album, until II found ブラックホールディスク [Black Hole Disc] by 日向電工 [Hinata Denkou], which after my very first listen of it, felt like something special!
_________________________________________________________

- What is Vocaloid? -

Vocaloid is a licensed "human voice synthesizer" software which you can create melodies from synthesized human voices by typing in the words you want them to sing.
Vocaloid has been widely used mainly in Japan since the late 2000s by music artists, who would make a song without the need to know how to sing or hire a vocalist. Such artists are called "Vocaloid producers".
And with that amazing opportunity to make the Vocaloid sing at any pace you want and how much words you want it to say, so has been created the opportunity to make instrumental music with vocal melodies which would be difficult for a real singer to sing. And "Black Hole Disc" is one of these kind of Vocaloid albums.
_________________________________________________________

- The album -

The album's music is very melodic (which II always like and appreciate in music), fast-paced, the songs have key changes (All the keys are minor keys which is a preference of mine, since major keys sound a bit too emotionally expressive for me), all the songs' genres are arguably "Shimokita-kei" (A unique Japanese style of rock) & "math pop", and there is a prominent 8-bit synthesizer with great melodies (hence, a bitpop influence) and along the Vocaloid characters singing very fast many words, you get some really quite unique music!
_________________________________________________________

- Summary -

It's really probably the perfect album, and you know what's insane? Its the only album ever made by its artist! "日向電工 [Hinata Denkou]", including one cover song they made which is perfect too!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q60JpAM6eF4

So II could say Hinata Denkou is the perfect artist, but they made only one album and a cover song! Some would say it's like cheating! II 100% understand them XD

You will find at least one or two albums like this in my chart, but "Black Hole Disc" has perfect songs! All of them are really amazing, that II rated them all 100/100 (Edit: It didn't age well for only few songs though... After all, nothing is perfect :), and there are few II wish II could rate over 100!
II kept re-listening to it over and over in a such a short span of time that the album became so quickly an all-time favorite of mine!
_________________________________________________________

; SPOILERS (My discovery (finding the album out)) ;

As a result of liking listening several times to Unhappy Refrain by Wowaka after finding it on a high spot in a customized chart of top albums from Japan on RateYourMusic.com, II decided to discover more albums of the Vocaloid scene by customizing a chart of esoteric albums of that scene. The esoteric category means you would get albums with a high rating but with less votes, which helps finding out some underrated albums, and specifically concerning the Vocaloid scene, II've found some really amazing albums which have successfully been entering my top 100 greatest music albums chart, therefore, looking for Vocaloid albums on RYM has been one of my greatest music discovery decisions ever!

It also has one of the best albums closers II've ever heard! II felt it right during the middle of the song, when II listened to the whole album for the first time, and right after it ended! II think that song and track #2 are two of the main reasons II decided to re-listen to the whole album.

遊星まっしらけ [Yuusei Masshirake] (meaning: Planet Masshirake) is an amazing Vocaloid electropop/electrorock album!
There is a consistent quality between almost each track, which makes the album feel like an adventure throughout this extraordinary planet.

Once again, II discovered it on the customized esoteric Vocaloid albums RYM chart. And back then, II wasn't too familiar and/or fond of electropop music, but Planet Masshirake has blown everything out of the water for me, which shows what a "pop epic" this album is.

If you liked the progressive pop Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay and the electropop Brat by Charli XCX, you might like Planet Masshirake, since it was ahead of those two by over a decade and its production is expansively immersive.

When it comes to music, it can be subjective; Some like a certain music and others don't, and we, BEA users, make charts displaying our top favorite albums of all time based on our personal preferences.
This is what "Rock, Rot & Rule" is all about!

Ironically, as my #1 favorite album of all time, this is a music album, although it's not an album that plays music, but an album that discusses music;

"Rock, Rot & Rule" is a 47-minute fake interview on the real "WFMU" radio station, which the host, played by Tom Scharpling, interviews the fictional interviewee, Roland Thomas Clontle (played by Jon Wurster), who is there to talk about his new book "Rock, Rot & Rule", which displays many artists' names and if they "rock", "rot" or "rule".
After the interview is over, callers (whom II think are real people!) call to the station to ask questions regarding the book and criticize Clontle's attitude and/or especially his unthorough research.

You could say it's basically a satire of people's opinions regarding liking some artists and disliking others, which is quite awesome to know such a release existed back in 1999 and still feels like it's today and is similar to a daily routine of experience in music forums like BEA and even others.

This album deserves an all-time best spot because of what it is. Seriously! XD

Another Vocaloid album. Only this time, while all of its songs contain human voice synthesized virtual characters singing, it is partly a Vocaloid album, since some characters are officially licensed as Vocaloid characters, and the others characters were created by a software called "UTAU", which lets anyone create their own voicebank, therefore these characters are UTAUs.
Yet the term "Vocaloid" can also refer to the scene which producers use all kinds of voice synthesizer software (usually Japanese software) for their compositions.

This time, the music's genres are: electronic rock, industrial rock, noise rock, and perhaps even electro-industrial and IDM.
And this album is such a unique work, since the music of all these genres has been executed masterfully thanks to the soundscape consisting of electronic sounds, industrial sounds and noisy guitar sounds, the melodies are creative enough, with some few cases of odd time signatures and polyrhythms, and the use of uncommon Vocaloids and UTAUs, which their voice may mainly sound sharp (sometimes thanks to additional effects), fits the instruments' aggressive sounds.

If you like the works of Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead's "Kid A", then you should definitely check this album out. It is as mind-blowing as those artists' works, since zddn's has mastered perfectly all of genres represented on "Assault Byte Grass"!

It could be the best industrial album (also electro-industrial) II've ever listened to (also the best IDM one). II never thought the industrial soundscapes could be mastered this perfectly, since it wasn't easy for me finding out industrial music which sounds that immersive.
_________________________________________________________

; SPOILERS (my discovery) ;

And this album is quite very super underrated, since its songs haven't reached over 2K views on YouTube, and II could only discover it after discovering a collaborative Vocaloid album (which you'll see ranked lower than here on my chart) which zddn participated in with a great song, which piqued my curiosity in digging into their discography and made me discover "Assault Byte Grass", an album that has become better and better the more II listened to it, and II'm proudly glad it is now one of my favorite albums on this chart.

地獄型人間動物園 [Jigokugata Ningen Doubutsuen] is another Vocaloid album II discovered on the customized esoteric Vocaloid albums RYM chart.
_________________________________________________________

- Music -

It is also a Shimokita-kei/math pop Vocaloid album, but with very few songs of other genres and the math pop songs' instrumental melodies and vocal melodies are more technical and virtuosic, thus, very impressive!

Several Vocaloid producers have been involved in this album by each making at least one song for it, and some of them haven't usually composed math pop songs throughout their whole discography, yet some of them have really excelled at making masterpieces of songs!
_________________________________________________________

- Lyrics -

Like how Vocaloid producers could compose their own compositions while adding complex vocal melodies for the Vocaloids to sing, they could make them sing lyrics they write themselves about any topic they wish to write about, and lyrically this album is a concept album, which tells about "Jigokugata Ningen Doubutsuen", which stands for "Human Zoo of Hell", where girls ostracized from society get locked up inside their cells, each for their own personal issues. That's why the album cover displays seven girls in squares, and every track title on this album ends with the word "ガール" ("girl"). The album does even a manga based on one of the girls!
Both album and manga potentially discuss on serious/depressing topics, so observe the lyrics carefully.
_________________________________________________________

- Summary -

After my first few listens, II had a strong feeling this album would be in my top 20 albums of all time, and the more II listened, the more it got confirmed!

One of the most musically-technical pop albums ever and musically-technical inspirational albums II've ever listened to. You wouldn't find a lot of pop music which sounds like this album!
_________________________________________________________

- Thank you -

Thank you so much to the RYM users for rating these album positively so II could discover them on the esoteric Vocaloid chart!
Without you, II wouldn't think II would find more albums like Unhappy Refrain, and also more Vocaloid albums of other genres, which II wouldn't expect to be such masterpieces!

The most insane thing is that Vocaloid music has been one the last genres II decided not even that very long ago to venture into throughout my extensive musical voyage, and II got so many awesome albums and songs recommended to me!
Therefore, as II typed earlier: One of my greatest music discovery decisions ever!

"Lamento" is another Vocaloid album II discovered on the customized esoteric Vocaloid albums RYM chart.

Lamento's music is alternative metal with some melodic metalcore and electronicore influences.

Many songs in this album sound balladic or at least dramatic and/or intense, they're very well-composed and features various instruments such as: distorted and/or reverberated electric guitars, a piano, strings and synths.

It took me a while to like this album as a whole. At first, II was only listening several times to very few songs from it, but II still decided to give all the other songs more chances, and the more II listened to the whole album, the more it grew on me, and II didn't expect this at all! This album has many songs in it, yet they all grew on me to the point the album has become one of my top favorite albums of all time. That's an amazing feat! And this album is really good!

"【L】【L】【L】【L】【L】 e.p" is another Vocaloid release which its main genre this time is electronicore, and II think this genre is not very common in popular music, so it's so amazing how this EP got ranked so high in my chart.

The album's compositions have great melodies and good-sounding instruments.

As on many Vocaloid albums, the most popular Vocaloid character: "Hatsune Miku" sings on this EP.
Her vocal melodies sound great here, and in some songs she screams.
_________________________________________________________

- Screams -

The screams' sound is achieved with some kinds of effects (Utsu-P is known for making Vocaloids "scream" in his songs).

In comparison with other metalcore bands (and all that emo stuff) which their singer screams in a way that sounds unpleasant to my ears, the synthetic effect of Miku screaming is a nice alternative, and screaming aside, II think the clean voice of Miku is the reason II would prefer this album over other emo music, since II like Miku's voice, and when a singer doesn't sound good to me, it can make turn off listening to the band's music.
_________________________________________________________

【L】

The album's tracks are all names starting with the letter:【L】, hence the album's title, which is a nice little concept, and the lenticular brackets 【】 are so bold, they catch every user's eye every time they see this album entry, so it feels nice to me that II have album titled like this in the top 10.
_________________________________________________________

+ My album listening experience & my discovery of it +

At first, II only liked listening to the first song (which is awesome), but after giving myself more chances to listen to the rest of the songs on the EP (because it's an EP, therefore: short), II liked listening to the whole EP, since the songs are impressively composed and good-sounding.

II think II first discovered this EP through YouTube's recommendations, or maybe on the aforementioned customized RYM chart, but consisting of EPs only.
While II first saw its short length, II thought of trying to listen to it right away, and II'm glad II've done so! :) It became better and better after listening to it several times!
