1984 – ELEKTRA
Produced By JIMMY HAYNES & STEEL PULSE

1. Steppin’ Out
2. Tightrope
3. Throne Of Gold
4. Roller Skates
5. Earth Crisis
6. Bodyguard
7. Grab Education
8. Wild Goose Chase

British reggae inspired by Bob Marley. Steel Pulse came together in 1975, and have been playing ever since. They hold the distinction of being the first non-Jamaican reggae band to win a Best Reggae Album Grammy Award. Earth Crisis is their fifth album, and marks their first decade together. And as pleasant and danceable as it sounds, it covers some serious ground. The album cover gives you ample warning about that…Reagan and Andropov are shown as leaders of the cold war. It also includes images of the Pope, the Ku-Klux Klan, Vietnam refugees and starving African children. Quite the picture. The music is not that depressing, even with the subject matter not being all about love and roses.

“Steppin’ Out” was a hit, and everything else follows suit. Earth Crisis is labeled as a serious protest album, but it’s really not much more than some danceable reggae. Nothing really stands out, making it basically background music. This was a step back from their previous album, True Democracy, and a step behind their next, which would be the Grammy winning Babylon The Bandit. Their label, at the time of Earth Crisis, was trying to move the band into a more mainstream direction, which may be why this seems a bit tentative. Even though they are still together, Steel Pulse has slowed way down. Since 2004, they have released just a pair of records (although the last was nominated for another Grammy). Unfortunately, Earth Crisis is simply not remarkable enough to hold much interest.

1994-CREATION
Produced By OASIS & MARK COYLE

1. Rock ‘N’ Roll Star
2. Shakermaker
3. Live Forever
4. Up In The Sky
5. Columbia
6. Supersonic
7. Bring It On Down
8. Cigarettes & Alcohol
9. Digsy’s Diner
10. Slide Away
11. Married With Children

Hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Oasis became the biggest band in Britain, and one of the biggest bands in the world. On the strength of three advance singles, “Supersonic”, “Shakermaker” and “Live Forever”, their debut album Definitely Maybe was released to the largest hoopla in England since the Beatles, coming straight out of the gates at number one. It’s not thet Oasis was really THAT great, but that they came along at a time when the British music scene needed a shot in the arm…and Oasis (along with bands like Blur) delivered. The ride for Oasis was incredible, short, and very rocky, but over their first two albums, they were at the top of their craft. Guitarist Noel Gallagher wrote the songs, which were sung and sneered by his brother Liam, and the formula created a storm of hits.

The three advance singles are excellent, particularly “Live Forever”. “Cigarettes & Alcohol” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” are also great singles, but the album as a whole is very good. The only drawback is that the band didn’t really have much in the way of original ideas…you can hear bits of many popular songs on the album. But they knew how to make the recycled riffs work, and work very well. Definitely Maybe could be seen as a near perfect storm (the follow up, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory is somehow even better), a band on the verge of total greatness before the excesses of rock & roll took over and ruined them. But in the mid 90’s, there was no one like Oasis, and their first two albums are among the most exciting works of the decade. Definitely a moment to not be missed from the 90’s.

2004 – TOSHIBA-EMI
Produced By NIGEL GODRICH & RADIOHEAD

1. 2 + 2 = 5 (Live)
2. Remyxomatosis (Cristian Vogel RMX)
3. I Will (Los Angeles Version)
4. Paperbag Writer
5. I Am A Wicked Child
6. I Am Citizen Insane
7. Skttrbrain (Four Tet RMX)
8. Gagging Order
9. Fog (Again) (Live)
10. Where Bluebirds Fly

Sometimes, even the biggest bands release something that takes you by surprise. Radiohead had released their sixth album, Hail To The Thief, in 2003, and were getting ready to go on hiatus. Com Lag was a surprise…it was intended (as shown on the album cover) to be released in Japan. It’s classified as an EP, probably to keep it from being linked to the rest of the band’s studio albums. Is it really an EP? It runs 10 tracks and over 36 minutes…you be the judge. What it is not is an album of new music from Radiohead. It’s actually a compilation of B-sides from 2003 singles, a pair of remixes, a pair of live tracks (including their hit “2 + 2 = 5”), and one alternate version (“I Will”). What it lacks is the cohesiveness of a true Radiohead album, and the excitement that hearing new work from the band can bring.

Because Radiohead isn’t a band that puts out a lot of live albums, the two concert tracks here are a nice touch. And if you’re a fan of Hail To The Thief, then consider this to be a nice compliment with alternate versions, remixes and single B-sides. There’s nothing bad here at all…there’s just nothing groundbreaking, which is what we’ve come to expect from this band. Is Com Lag simply a space filler from a group that was at the beginning of a four year silence? The fact is that it’s good but not great, satisfying but not very stimulating, and a surprisingly lateral move from a band known for giant leaps forward. It’s disappointing because of who it is, a band that we have come to expect bigger and better things from. And they usually deliver. But not here. Com Lag sounds good, but it’s not very important, and not very original at all.

1988-IRS
Produced By DAVID Z, JERRY HARRISON & FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS

1. She Drives Me Crazy
2. Good Thing
3. I'm Not The Man I Used To Be
4. I'm Not Satisfied
5. Tell Me What
6. Don't Look Back
7. It's OK (It's Alright)
8. Don't Let It Get You Down
9. As Hard As It Is
10. Ever Fallen in Love

Just when it looked like New Wave had run its course, Fine Young Cannibals came from nowhere and hit us in the face with maybe 2 of the decades catchiest songs. FYC was formed by former English Beat members Andy Cox and David Steele. They recruited British actor Roland Gift, and the trio made 2 albums before disappearing. The first did nothing. This one was huge. "She Drives Me Crazy" was everywhere for about three years, and "Good Thing" was even better. This was 80's dance music with something different...an element of cool. They even threw in a Buzzcocks cover ("Ever Fallen In Love"). Driven with 80's keyboards but also a lot of guitar, this album is as catchy as anything made during the decade...but they do it for an entire album. Well played, sirs!

The band broke up afterward. There have been reunions, but they'll never top this. One of the better (and now very underrated) albums of the 80's.

1993 – ISLAND
Produced By STEVE ALBINI

1. Rid Of Me
2. Missed
3. Legs
4. Rub ‘Til It Bleeds
5. Hook
6. Man-Size Sextet
7. Highway 61 Revisited
8. 50ft Queenie
9. Yuri-G
10. Man-Size
11. Dry
12. Me-Jane
13. Snake
14. Ecstasy

Aside from the strange and unattractive album cover art, there aren’t many bad things to say about Rid Of Me. PJ Harvey’s second album, it was recorded very shortly after the debut album (Dry), and is the last album by the original PJ Harvey trio. The album utilizes the hushed to noise dynamics, sometimes pushing them to the limit, that were popular at the time (via Nirvana), and while it may sound like an almost simple punk album on the surface, the songwriting here is actually becoming much more complex than it was on the debut. The lyrics by Harvey are great, showing her quirkiness and sense of humor as well as being sometimes very serious and frightening. The band plays like there’s a fire somewhere nearby, tearing through the songs and showing considerable restraint when needed during the quieter passages.

Rid Of Me contains no big hits, but tracks like “50ft. Queenie” and “Man-Size” could have been, and are excellent. Her take on Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” positively rocks, and is refreshing. Things can get a little abrasive at times, but for the most part, you can’t go wrong with this. Rid Of Me is the first of three great albums by Harvey (along with To Bring You My Love and Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea), all of which are different and could have been by three different artists…a testament to the versatility and creativity of the artist. Her profile has never been really high, and outside of the three classic albums, her work tends to be ignored…but she still soldiers on, with an eleventh studio album due out in 2016. PJ Harvey is always interesting, always entertaining, and always worth hearing.
