11. San Diego Serenade
Not quite the best album by Nanci Griffith, Late Night Grande Hotel is more on the pop side than most of her other efforts. Eaturing backup vocakls by Phil Everly and Tanita Ticeram, and production from former Zombie Rod Argent, Griffith’s songs are mature to the point of hanging on the line of adult contemporary. In other words, don’t expect much rock. Or country. This is Griffith’s journey to what amounts to pretty much the dead center of the road.
There are some truly fine moments here: “It’s Just Another Morning Here” is one of her best songs: “The Power Lines” is a high point, and her reading of Tom Waits’ “San Diego Serenade” is excellent. As is “Fields Of Summer”. This album is not what Nanci does best, but she still does it better than a lot of people. [First added to this chart: 02/08/2013]

You've gotta love Nanci Griffith. And if you're going to record an album of covers, take a page from this book. The album title comes from the book she's holding on the cover, written by Truman Capote. The songs are ones that were hugely influential to her throughout her life. The result? One of the most impressive and touching covers records ever made.
Not only is everything recorded with loving care, but the song choices themselves show that Nanci has incredible taste in music. She hits everyone from Bob Dylan ("Boots Of Spanish Leather") and John Prine ("Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness") to Townes Van Zandt ("Tecumseh Valley") and Woody Gurthrie ("Do Re Mi"). Other songs by the likes of Kate Wolf, Janis Ian, Vince Bell, Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot and Jerry Jeff Walker couldn't be more perfect. Even an 1877 Carter Family tune ("Are You Tired Of Me Darlin") and the traditional South African song "Wimoweh" are perfect fits.
Even better, she was able to get a bunch of the songwriters and other luminaries to play...so there are guest appearances by Prine and Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Leo Kottke, Iris DeMent, Chet Atkins, Bela Fleck, Emmylou Harris and Allison Kraus. This is one of the most perfect country albums of the last two decades. Once again, the underrated Nanci Griffith rules! [First added to this chart: 01/23/2013]

A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
