Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Solid! Let nobody tell you you have bad or even mediocre taste in music. There's certainly nothing here I could reasonably argue with, though I suppose I could always go the unreasonable route and argue just for the sake of being irritating.

Very cool chart - for those of us who 'lived' the 70's, the albums of that era have stood the test of time. Like you, my chart is biased to the 70's. Although not in my top 100, I really got a kick out of seeing 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere', 'Blind Faith' & 'Express' in your chart.
