It features some of the beach boys most forward thinking moments. The most famous off course is the brilliant, California girls, the intro is stunning. The non vocal, summer means new love, has hints of the pet sounds instrumentals to come. There's some underrated stuff here like, the folk rock of, girl don't tell me, the best version of, help me Rhondda, and, let him run wild. Amusement parks USA is silly, but fun, and, salt lake city, is enjoyable. You're so good to me, is a strong track too. Maybe the most interesting track, at least lyrically, is Brian's, I'm bugged at my ole man. It's done in a kind of spontaneous jokey way, but knowing of his tempestuous relationship with his father, Murry, is does sound a little unsettling, like it's a little close to the bone. Summer days, is an uneven album as a whole, compared with what came before, and what's to come after,(discounting the party! album), still, like most of their records, it's fun. "  [+]  Reply

Its like she envisions or, more accurately, hears music with more clarity than almost any human in pop music history. From the jump, with this solo debut of hers, its clear she is a legitimate A+ guitarist, a freakishly pristine and perfect pitch singer, and lyrically a poetic force of nature. Even on this, her first go at an album, she took all these insane talents and managed to put out a truly gorgeously shimmering debut album, which feels full and completely filled in despite it being by and large just her and a guitar. She manages to fill up the sound completely with complex chord structures and intensely beautiful, constantly shifting and soaring vocals. Intimate songs like "The Dawntreader" and the character study "Marcie" almost sound too angellic. And the guitar playing is, again, incredibly dexterous and sounds easy almost because she was such a virtuoso - case in point the ease of her singing over the top of the complex guitar of" Sistowbell Lane". There are also some parts that are just over the top with their speedy 2 or 3 part vocal parts like in "The Pirate of Penance" is unlike anything singer-songwriters of the time. The only knock I have against this record is that the vocal pyrotechnics do get a bit over the top. Just every once in awhile. Also its not like the whole flow of the album or the poetry here bites quite as hard as they do on "Blue". So, no, I'm not quite ready to say this is on the same level as that album. Still, its G-R-E-A-T. This album should be recognized as one of the best debut albums of the 60s. I don't feel like that is the general consensus, and that saddens me. Grade: 9.0/10"  [+]  Reply

When I compared the first half of Donovan’s double LP as being some of the best folk rock EVER released. As good as The Byrd’s Mr. Tamborine Man. As good as Love’s Forever Changes. I meant it. I really did. I LOVE those ten songs with all my heart. But, you know what? The second half is even better! It’s just completely different. Gone are the catchy fun sing-a-long pop songs. Instead Donovan delves into something mystical. Something enchanted. It casts a spell transporting you to a small fishing village on the craggy shore from a long, long time ago. From a land & culture that is no more and has been lost. When elves still had power and fairies ruled the woods. These are sea songs for a shire. It’s a bewitching listen when life was simple and better for it. When life was still tied to the land and the tides dictated chores. Not time. Not clocks. It’s as if Donovan feels not just born in the wrong decade, but the wrong era altogether. And the spell he casts with both the music & lyrics is seamless. Nothing breaks it. You can actually smell the salt of the sea. Feel the spray of the ocean mist. Nothing reminds you that these songs were written in the sixties. Because these songs don’t even know that radio exists. Grade: A+. Simply one of the greatest double albums of all time. I would put this up against anything in the rock canon. Anything. That means you The White Album. That means you Blonde on Blonde. And Donovan shoots back to number one where he belongs."  [+]  Reply
