"This is one album I just have to give a 10/10. It's in my top three of all time and is pure, unadulterated AC/DC in the middle of their prime. Lack of a hit single may turn off some people from caring for this album, but it grows on you until you realize just how damn perfect it is."  Reply

Having turned 30, she delivered her most rounded mature album to date. She acknowledged her irish heritage, taking inspiration both from the Celtic instrumentation, and, at least in the case of the title track, from James Joyce's most sensual of characters, Molly Bloom. There is a broader folk influence too, which is partly down to Bush's brother Paddy, a fan of ethnic music. It is he who introduced her to The Trio Bulgarka, traditional Bulgarian singers who appear throughout the album. Michael Nyman arranges strings on "Reaching Out"; Nigel Kennedy appears on "The Fog" and "Heads We're Dancing"; Dave Gilmour plays on "Love And Anger" and "Rocket's Tail". Even her father, credited as Dr. Bush, contributes spoken word dialog to "The Fog", a song nominally about a parent teaching their child to swim -symbolism that is not hard to decipher. (An aditional track, "Walk Straight Down The Middle", featured on the cd). Although champions of her teenage spectral keening might have wished she had remained forever young, Kate breaks new ground, welcoming an era where global influences are paired with computerized proficiency. There is a distinct quality of womanly sexuality to The Sensual World too, as well as an attempt to address outside of her Kentish back yard. Whereas once she sounded as if she was happiest playing organ in the barn behind her parents' house, here she sings as a fully accomplished recording artist ready for international success. A jubilee is a jamboree with less amor and more uil, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but at least we’ve steeped an album out of it. I remember when I first heard Everybody Wants To Love You and all going through my head was how I used to hang in studios with so many singer/songwriters who would have loved to create something like that. Felt like she nailed it. That was it. Absolute bullet. Questioned why she wasn’t bigger, why this wasn’t the smash of the summer, track of the year, blasting out of every car whipping down the beach front. Felt like a nugget of gold was tossed into a mall’s wish fountain. An epitome of indie pop fired at us from nowhere and we shrugged it off. We plucked it out of that wish fountain on occasion, but I’m still not quite sure people realized it was an actual gold nugget. Won’t lie, wasn’t super hot on her follow up record, but at least she gained momentum. Was happy about that. Knew the next release would be make or break time. And then something interesting happened. She was shot out of a canon. That same brain listening to Everybody Wants To Love You for the first time would have never imagined this singer would be topping bestseller lists while also having chart topping hits, but I’m glad Japanese Breakfast squeezed through the crowd. Think she made it with this one. A warm, glistening, citrus-burst of a record with a summertime fuzz and the sadness which comes along with it, a hug for tears happy or sad. I may be writing to Ms. Breakfast as to why she dedicates the final thirty seconds of her songs to building them, but otherwise, I think this record is everything it wants to be. "i remember the first time i heard this album. i purchased it at some commercial giant (best buy, i believe), went home, threw the disc into my portable sony walkman and paced around my parents' backyard. i was barefoot. the grass was green and slightly damp. the sun was up, and there wasn't a clo...""i remember the first time i heard this album. i purchased it at some commercial giant (best buy, i believe), went home, threw the disc into my portable sony walkman and paced around my parents' backyard. i was barefoot. the grass was green and slightly damp. the sun was up, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. it was just cool enough outside that the sun was not a nuisance. i listened through the entire album, throwing tennis balls for my dog throughout the ordeal. i was floored. i also felt a little bit dirty. this was not an album for children, but at the same time, that's exactly what it was. it's the opposite of disney. there's no sugar-coating. it's life. it's raw. it's messy. yes, it's dirty. and it's brilliant. i read through the lyrics over and over, making sure i understood every word. this was not a lyrical style i was familiar with, and every word was so packed full of wit, the packaging could hardly contain it. it took me years to truly understand a lot of it, if i'm being honest (and i am)."  [+]  Reply
