I agree with previous posts that you need to listen to this album in its totality, I first listened on a long drive & it was perfect. The other suggestion I’d make is after your first listen look up the Hazards Of Love WIKI and learn the convoluted story under pinning the album then go back and listen to the album a second time. Finally my favourite parts of this release were the heaviest sections but the quiter moments work ok too. Easily one of my favourite Decemberist’ albums . Highly recommended if you haven’t listened to it."  [+]  Reply

Instrumentally, it is extremely diverse with some outstanding performances on the trumpet, piano, violin and saxophone, This makes the music so grand and then to add on top the brilliant vocal performance makes for a fantastic listen. It feels so clean and natural to listen too as well and sounds so highbrow and intellectual in terms of its composition. There are one or two tracks closer to filler and it can feel slow at times but these are my only real criticisms of the album. Overall, this album is so under rated on this site and if this is his 4th best album then I am very excited to go back and listen to his other releases. "  [+]  Reply

Instead of coming off sounding like a bored music student arbitrarily fiddling with keys and knobs, here Thom sounds like he has an objective, a narrative (both musically and conceptually) that he wants to see through. From the groovy opening "Traffic" right through to the hauntingly layered "Runwayaway", the music is poised, diverse, feverish and constantly keeping you guessing. This isn't "side-project Thom", this is a master of his craft sitting down and taking time to sketch out and construct at once an earnest and euphoric collection of music. It's no secret Radiohead's previous two albums left some die-hards dissatisfied. This will not."  [+]  Reply

I sure hope this ultra modern production isn't influential on Hardcore and post-hardcore for years to come because, man, I hate it/ a lot. The anthemic shouts are cool but to say they lean on them would be an understatement. The riff work is alright, but just the way they sound is rubbing me the wrong way. After the first 2 or 3 tracks I was thinking "Yep, this is gonna be top 100 of year for me at least." Even at that point there were some production choices which I was a bit ish about. But the power of the performances were getting me hyped up. But as the album progressed there was a steady and consistent decline in affinity for the album and the band and the sound. Don't like the Alternative Metal sounds, synth sounds, pop sounds, me no like any of it lol. Okay, that's not true, I liked maybe 1 in 5 production choices. whatever I'm rambling. I respect that they are "pushing forward the form" and so forth. That is cool and should be commended. But in this case, to my ears, they are pushing it somewhere but I'm not sure its forward. Not backward either. Maybe they are just kinda nudging it sideways or something. (that analogy died fast upon my fingertips.) EDIT: coming back to say that "Hate" is the wrong word. I don't hate this. I think if this album was playing I would have a good time hearing it. There have been a few albums this year that I "Hated" and this ain't it. However, I guess I just don't like it, and on a scale of hate to love, this would be almost dead center and slightly leaning over into dislike. Okay, that's all. "  [+]  Reply
