"I’m struggling to understand why this album was so poorly received, sure it’s no “I’m Wide Awake” and there a couple of duds in the track list but it’s still a very strong work. Songs like Dance and Sing, Mariana Trench, Pan and Broom, Persona Non Grata, Tilt-a-Whirl, and To Death's Heart rank as...""I’m struggling to understand why this album was so poorly received, sure it’s no “I’m Wide Awake” and there a couple of duds in the track list but it’s still a very strong work. "The girl talk albums, like 2006's night ripper, are difficult to critique. The guy just uses a computer and music samples from a wide array of pop to create new song (mixes). The guy just uses a computer and music samples from a wide array of pop to create new song (mixes). (i guess there are a few drum fills.) Then there's the choice of samples, here theres a bunch of 90s/00s hip hop with 70s/80s pop. There are the mixes themselves, like when Gillis mixes notorious big with elton john's "tiny dancer" or mixing the "i love you" part of "silly love songs" against 2 live crew's chorus to "we want some pussy" (!). Some of those mixes are quite inspired. Then there's discussion as to the definition of songs, why they exist and if this would've simply've been best served as one long party jam a la prince's lovesexy. Then there's discussion as to liking this music is more being fond of the underlying samples and reminiscing on the underlying music, as opposed to attributing worth to the end result. Then there's dicussion about how much talent it takes to weave these jams. You don't need to know how to play an (traditional) instrument or sing. You need some good software, good talent for that software, and a very good ear. (i tried making my own mixes unsucessfully, inspired by girl talk -- it's not easy!) Is the sum of the parts a collage of the parts are a brand new whole? These are a lot of topics to wade through to determine how much i like this album compared to the "typical album". It's party music. It's time capsule music. It's a dj mix. It's an amalgam of different pop styles that create a new pop style/genre. But most of all it's fun, and in those rare times the mixes aren't that good, they're over in seconds. This is the music of the mp3 generation -- take that as you will."  [+]  Reply

The sound is unconventional and quite unique which is mainly down to the vocal by Jordaan Mason. His harsh and raw voice fits the musical styling perfectly and when you combine that with the unrefined nature of the recording you get an extremely consistent sound. We can easily get wrapped up in this complex atmosphere as its dark and melancholic tone can weigh down on any listener who gives it the opportunity to do so. Lyrically, it is a crazy experience with this story of a married couple and their vast troubles that put a strain on their relationship. They go over some really out there topics but they keep the meanings and emotions grounded making it easy to relate to the issues we are being described. Furthermore, it is a lot of fun to explore the lyrics on every song on this album and is well worth your time even if this type of music isn't for you. Finally, there is a phenomenal ensemble of performers in the group The Horse Museum who back up Jordaan Mason and his voice brilliantly. The list of instruments we are treated to feels like its endless and all of them are used very effectively. The flute, banjo and trombone are some of my personal favourites but you could pick out a lot more as they all excel. The Horse Museum just add an extra dimension to the soundscape and makes the record feel grand and complex whilst maintaining that gritty, raw tone. Overall, this record grew on me over time and deserves to be spoken about a lot more as it is extremely intelligent and is musically fantastic. "  [+]  Reply
