Had it been released in December 1966 as originally planned, it would have changed the course of popular music forever, having just as great, if not a greater, impact than the Beatles with Sgt. Pepper's. But even released four decades later it stands as an extraordinary feat of musical ingenuity. Not only was this album years ahead of its time - it was decades ahead. Even released in 2004 this sounded fresh and groundbreaking. This album is coherent like no other I have ever heard. Musical and lyrical themes and ideas intertwine and recapitulate throughout the record, providing a thoroughly cohesive and consistent listen throughout; its unique three-movement structure is downright ingenious, with all the songs linked inseparably. The arrangements are just incredible, production pin-perfect and performances stunning. Even at 61, Brian Wilson's voice remains powerful and provides impeccable delivery. The breadth and depth of emotions covered in this album is simply incredible, moving from the amazing beauty of Our Prayer to the jaunty and uplifting Heroes and Villains to the somber and thought-provoking Surf's Up to the experimental Mrs O'Leary's Cow and then the downright joyous Good Vibrations. The lyrics, courtesy of Wilson's collaborator Van Dyke Parks, are poetic in their vivid imagery and depth of imagination. In all then, this is possibly the most incredible album I've ever heard, and as far as I'm concerned the definitive artistic statement in popular music. To consider this album was originally conceived over half a century ago by a 23 year-old man who was half-deaf, had terrible drug-addiction issues, suffered paranoid schizophrenia and experienced several mental breakdowns, who somehow was able to piece it all together perfectly 40 years later is nothing short of astounding. It upsets me greatly that this isn't even in the top 500 on this website, it's just a bit rediculous really."  [+]  Reply

Musically, it is brilliant with the group combining both their darker side and their more pop centred side. This leads to a fantastic contrast between the songs which is best displayed by Open and Friday I'm In Love where one is atmospheric and haunting and the latter is happy and upbeat. You get the best of both sides of the Cure on this record and so it has something for everyone. Lyrically, it is a masterpiece, just like every Cure album, with Robert Smith weaving his tales from song to song and forcing us to think deeper on his words. His wordsmanship is on another level and his lyrics demand and deserve attention paid to them and the way he delivers them is brilliant. The lyrics as well as the music is great at making you become introspective as well and the group set up a fantastic atmosphere for us to be able to wallow and dwell in. They maintain this gloomy environment throughout and when they do slip into their more upbeat style it is still tainted with darkness hidden in the music and so songs like Friday I'm In Love and Doing The Unstuck feel like a small and brief candle in a pitch black room. Every song is great on here as well and only add to the suspense of the atmosphere so no song is skippable. The instrumentation is phenomenal throughout and the Cure really have a unique way of performing that always make their music stand out and feel special. Overall, their albums feel special because the group themselves are a one of a kind band we will probably never see the likes of again and this album is amongst the greatest they have ever made and it really deserves to be appreciated more in their discography and in the world of music as a whole. This leads to a very balanced sounding record that fulfils both things you could be looking for. If you enjoy the more sing a long, pop rock songs then they are on here and are so infectious and catchy. If you enjoy the psychedelic and complex musicianship of the group then that is also on here with a diverse array of instruments all played beautifully. The record never feels slow as well and the music flies by due to how well it is put together. No song is skippable also and the record is an experience right from the start all the way to the end as the group really find their flow on this album making it feel so cohesive. The only issue is the length which is just so short which can lead to me craving more of it once its finished. Other than that this release is stunning and such a delight to listen to. Overall, a fantastic album that really deserves a lot of credit for its progressiveness and for its very high quality which is evident throughout. "  [+]  Reply
