Before they split up in 2018, the Pennsylvania-based Stray Birds recorded four albums of very well-written, competently played, folksy bluegrass. They also performed multiple times at my favorite festival, the Albino Skunk Music Festival in South Carolina, which is how I first heard them. I'll be honest: I probably should like them more than I do based on genre and overall aesthetic, but I've never absolutely loved Maya de Vitry's voice. There's a particular style of vocal delivery that always sounds to me slightly more like a muppet (I'm thinking more Kermit than Animal) than a human singer, and she sings in that style. But this complaint probably says more about me than it says about Maya de Vitry. I definitely think the Stray Birds seem like nice people, and that goes a long way with me. If and when they ever reunite, I'll go to their shows and buy their albums.
