This album kicks off "Mr.Johnson,' opening with a wicked good solo blues intro by Mabern before the rest of the ensemble jumps in swingin'. Solos seem to run a bit more free here, but Mabern holds things down nicely with solid a solid foundation of rhythmic block chords. The additional sonic blend added by the trombone is also welcome here. The following "The Iron Man" combines a big band elan with ensemble intimacy, becoming a real highlight. The album retains this consistency through the remaining 8 cuts, and makes for a nice addendum to the earlier album.
