Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. I love this album. Great songs. And the band rocks much harder live than their studio stuff suggests. Need more like this.

If nothing else... this guy has a great scream. I personally like the bombastic stuff like this... but I feel it isn't quite as genuine as I'd like.
This is my favorite album throughout many genres because it seems so genuinely soulful and is simply enjoyable.
