Brilliant production from Todd, excellent songs from the band, and they mesh together wonderfully. The best song on this album is "Dear God," though that's not technically on the album. "Grass," "Ballet for a Rainy Day," and "Earn Enough For Us" are all top tracks as well, and there isn't a weak spot on the record, though it slows down a bit by the second half. Great work by a good band.

I'll be honest it took me 3 full listens to understand fully this Tod Rundgren produced album

It is apparently a concept album of sorts around the 4 seasons and the life cycle from birth , growing up and eventual death

Let's start with the really good in "1000 Umbrella's" , "Season Cycle" , "Earn Enough For Us" , "Sacrificial Bonfire" and the classic "Dear God" ( yes I'm including it as it should have appeared on the original release)

However this album is severely let down by tracks that blow , of course I'm referring to the terrible "Supergirl" , "Ballet for A Rainy Day" , "Mermaid Smiled" and the completely annoying "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul"

So over all its a real mixed bag unfortunately - sprinklings of good , plenty of ok and a bunch of bad

Whilst I can appreciate the craftsmanship that has clearly gone into making this album, there is something that doesn't click for me. I think I find the melodies a bit cheesy. Love the arrangements, lyrically it's strong, but if you don't have a strong hook... That's not to say I don't enjoy it - it's a good album. But that's where the plaudits stop for me. At 'good'. Less than the sum of its parts, I'm afraid to say. Best tracks: Grass, The Meeting Place, Another Satellite.

Swindons finest are forced by management to team up with the legendary Todd Rundgren resulting in a spontanious clash of ego followed by endless fighting, bickering and mutual disrespect.
Perhaps all albums should be made this way?

There is no doubt that this is their most accomplished album, in my mind, and as has been said already the track flow seems almost, if not, perfect. Individually all the tracks are 85-95, apart from "Dying", but as a whole it comes into its own and is an album everyone should try. Having said that I don't love it quite as much as I do their debut album, two totally contrasting styles, the best of their melodic pop versus the best of their punk pop, and, old bloke that I am, my heart goes with the early one.

I am left to wonder how much I would like this if I hadn't heard it dozens of times before. As it is, it's amazing.

Produced by Todd Rundgren, Skylarking bridges the gap between college rock and neo-psychedelia. Without a doubt, this is the finest XTC album, and contains stellar tracks like "Summer's Cauldron" and "Grass." Bandleader Andy Partridge proves himself capable of composing quirky but well-crafted pop tunes like "That's Really Super, Supergirl" and the Beatle-esque "Earn Enough For Us."

The halfway point between the Beach Boys and Stone Roses. It's a shame Dear God was cut from the original release of the album, it's one of the best songs of the 80s.

An album that I've been listening to for a few months. I was blown away on my first listen at how well the album flowed from song to song. Skylarking is a true masterpiece of Pop, Psychedelia and Baroque tinged songs while having a unique Pastoral feel.
