The implication that racism and discrimination died at the emancipation proclamation is one of the most damaging implications in American politic. Max Roach is here to give us the truth. Max Roach considered himself to be still a slave to the American way, opening the album by drawing parallels between himself and his enslaved African ancestors. He drums with the fury of a man who has been put down too many times, and refuses to be treated as anything other than what he is, a human being. His solo in Freedom Day is astonishing, he will not run, he will not be ashamed any longer. The section of drum and screams in Triptych is a release of the tension they have felt too long, the screams are not for effect, you can feel the violence being released, you can hear the frustration in the voice, the pressure being let out slowly. This album is a centerpiece of the 60’s civil rights movement. It is not only a message that the black community will no longer stand for the injustices they have experienced, it is also a celebration of the rights they would, and still are, taking back from a country that captured them and disenfranchised them.
