For me, the sixties was the birth of Psychedelia, music of the free and mind expanding and creative albums with amazing cover artwork dominated. Many of the albums below fit into the psychedelic genre and some cross it like the Yes album which sits between the sound of psychedelia and the birth of prog. Listen to the Colours of Your Mind by Dusty Springfield and even this crosses into that psychedelic arena. Psychedelia and prog are just labels, if you listen to an album which has the trademarks of a genre then you decide. Nobody is going to shoot you down for mis-describing something you like, the main thing is that you enjoy the music. In my listing of the albums below, I have categorised how I feel the album sits, mainly as a guide for fellow music lovers, if you disagree, that is fine.

Psychedelic. Like Sgt Pepper, an album which sounds years ahead of its time. There isn't a poor track on the album, the musicianship and vocals are the best on any Tim Buckeley album in my opinion. 'Pleasant Street' is so infectious it makes you want to tap it the rhythm on your legs or anything else nearby! 'Carnival Song' draws on similar effects used on Sgt Pepper with the addition of fairground sounds which blend seamlessly with the music. The psychedelic 'Hallucinations' is sad but musically brilliant. The track which follows is the equally psychedelic but more upbeat 'I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain'. The music on the album is diverse with lyrics like 'O Flying Fish, Please Flutter By Door, Yes You Can Drink My Lies, If You First Read My Eyes' leaving the listener to travel in any direction they should choose on this amazing psychedelic journey.

Psychedelia. Amazing and rare psychedelic masterpiece. Fantastic psychedelic album which was years ahead of its time when first released. Beautiful dreamy female vocals compliment a plethora of instruments and sound effects. The recording quality on the vinyl re-release which I have just purchased is excellent. Cloud Song could become one of my all time favourite psychedelic tracks. Such a diverse and creative album as this will sit in a very high position in my record collection.

Psychedelic. An excellent album, the experience starts off with the dark sound of a ships fog horn which blends into a drone for the opening of the instrumental 'Song For Our Ancestors'. 'Living In The USA', 'Quicksilver Girl' and 'Gangster Of Love' are all fantastic, in fact the whole album is! I am lucky enough to have the original EMI press in near mint condition as well as a re-press on coloured vinyl which is still in shrink wrap!

Psychedelic. It's such a shame that the original sleeve photo is no longer considered appropriate as it so much fitted the album. I still keep an eye out for a 'cheap' copy at record fares so that I can replace the modern dull cover of my vinyl re-issue. Moan over, the album is a psychedelic masterpiece with tracks like Vood Chile, Burning Of The Midnight Lamp and All Along The Watchtower being personal favourites.

My absolute favourite Airplane album, a Psychedelic masterpiece to lose yourself within. One of my top ten psychedelic albums where you hear more with each listen.

Psychedelic. Straight out of the blocks this is wall to wall instrumental sixties psychedelic heaven. Side 1 (vinyl) is awesome. I managed to get one of the limited edition marbled orange vinyl re-presses before they all disappear!
