Working class genius who just wanted a guitar and express himself with it, and make love to it if he could. It added to the psychedelic movement a more guitar-heavy sound than the Beach Boys and Beatles did before. And it inspired rock to get more aggressive. Whenever I try to trace back the roots of heavy metal, or (hardcore) punk, or hard rock, I always end up with Ozzy, Iggy and Jimmy, and then I would have to admit to myself that ultimately what inspired them was Jimi (as they would themselves too). It simply just always seems to lead to him. And why? Because what made those genres stand out wasn't necessarily the speed and vocal strains; those were already brought to extremes in the '60s (soul and old school rock 'n' roll). What's left is the sonic experimentations, the layers of distortion, and the lightning speed solos that come from nothing, wander around, and end in nothing... in a good way, unlike most people who tried to recreate them.

I know what you're thinking, why this one? Their debut with Nico is in my opinion a good example of senseless experimentalism. Sure, as Eno said, few people heard it back then, but they all started a band afterwards... but I bet that none of them used any of the ideas that were in that album.
This one's influence, however, is very clear. A noisy, messy approach to rock, which has been incorporated in many future genres, from punk to noise rock, from no wave to grunge. [First added to this chart: 09/27/2018]

The Beatles weren't only the first ones to truly exploit the world of gimmicks the studio renders, but also the best at hiding the fact that they're basically just gimmicks.
