I never really got why this one was considered the best stones album. I gave it a couple listens, thought it was remarkably consistent for a double album, and moved on. but coming back to it, it seems to be more about the story and just the fact that this music that sounded like it was coming straight from Tennessee was actually being made by four white British guys. and the music to back it up is fantastic. soulful and catchy as hell. he doesn't remember recording this album. he genuinely has no memories of ever being in the studio during the making of this album because of how much coke he was on. and listen to how much passion and energy he puts into it. that fantastic dark groove that properly introduces you to the album after a minute of ambient sounds, the heartbreak in his voice on closing track "Wild is the Wind", you could just tell he was in a completely different world when he was making this, and it's so good as a result.
when we first hear bowie's voice crooning "The return of the thin white duke...", I always get the chills. [First added to this chart: 02/28/2019]
