Comedy rock, experimental psychedelic rock

I've never heard an album that succeeds so well in being so many different things. on one hand it's political commentary that aims at everyone from the hippies to the politicians they were railing at. it's clearly referencing the Beatles in the original cover art and the fact that it's a concept album, but it seems to be parodying the whole psychedelic rock movement because, according to Zappa, so many of the bands involved, including the Beatles, were, as the title states, only in it for the money and just banking on the dumb young kids dropping acid and loving everything and everyone instead of actually making mind-bending psychedelic music. and of course, Zappa takes the opportunity to show them how it should be done, mixing fluid, constantly changing music of all sorts of genres with production tricks that blow you out of the water -- I almost wish Frank had invited John and Paul and the boys over and played this album for them at full volume from start to finish with the original cover art hanging on the wall.
oh, and it's fucking hilarious.

Jazz, experimental blues

and then for him to release this a year later is just absurd. the whole thing is extremely well-played and a showcase of just how talented of a musician Zappa really was, and it's also a terrific almost-psychedelic jazz album that puts you in the bright and badass world you see on the cover. it's Zappa just reminding you that he can do whatever he wants.

Baroque pop, psychedelic pop

I think the best way to show someone how drastic of a statement this album was is to show them the chorus of "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times", in which Brian loudly sings "Sometimes I feel very sad." from a band that was famous for singing about girls, surfing, and California, this was such a huge change in pace that I can't even imagine what it must have felt like to listen to it for the first time. it might just be the perfect showcase of what pop music is capable of becoming, with its heartfelt lyrics, smooth harmonic vocals, psychedelic compositions, adventurous arrangements, and huge, otherworldly production.
