To say that the latest album by Torres is aptly named would be an understatement. From the opening lines of “Good Scare” to the end of the album closing title track, Silver Tongue is an indie pop record loaded with great inspired lyrics that cut deep into the core of human connection. As someone who was never totally in love with her other records, this one has really won me over in a big way. [First added to this chart: 02/02/2020]

In an age of autotune and glossy clean production, Lonnie Holley's weathered voice and loose bluesy soul really stands out. On National Freedom, Holley falls somewhere between the junk band madness of Tom Waits, contemplative blues of Leadbelly, and the socially conscious poetic soul of Gil Scott-Heron. Comparisons aside, Holley really just continues to sound like no one but himself. [First added to this chart: 08/08/2020]

Over the past few years, JOBS have proven to be one of the adventurous new rock bands. In their bio, they claim to "make the bizarre and uncomfortable accessible, and make the accessible bizarre." It's a perfectly apt summation. Like past records, Endless Birthdays breaks all rules, resulting in an off-kilter and very tense listening experience that sounds like equal parts experimental jazz and post-punk. The influences are clearly more wide-ranging than I could possibly guess, but hints of Zorn, Arthur Russell, and Wire are all to be found. Like past JOBS records, Endless Birthdays doesn't exactly go down smoothly, but nothing this innovative ever does. [First added to this chart: 09/20/2020]

Picking up where they left off with their critically praised 2019 debut, Fontaines D.C. push their sound further on A Hero's Death. Like a Dublin counterpoint to Detroit's Protomartyr, Fontaines D.C. cuts deep with the wit of The Fall and a gloomy atmosphere characterized by a steady rhythm section and winding, feedback drenched guitars. And just when you think you have them figured out, they'll throw in a ballad like "Oh Such A Spring" to keep listeners on their toes. [First added to this chart: 08/08/2020]

There's no band like The Residents. Existing in anonymity since the early 1970s, they're one of the most unique musical acts of the past century. No one who ever listens to The Residents will hear music the same way after. In the recent decades, they've remained active, though the critics seemingly lost interest. Sticking to their territory of conceptual releases, Metal Meat & Bone finds The Residents paying tribute to a mysterious blues singer, Alvin Snow. The first disc of the album features The Residents fleshing out Snow's songs into twisted rock songs with some pretty great riffs, and includes incredible guest vocals by Frank Black on the standout "DIE! DIE! DIE!". The 2nd disc of the album are the demos of the album tracks, and they may be even more enjoyable than the fleshed out versions. Recorded in a more raw blues style with gravely vocals, these songs end up sounding quite a bit like The Residents' odd take on classic Tom Waits or Howlin' Wolf. I'm just diving into Bandcamp this year. #1 source. I've heard some duds for sure, but it's been rewarding. I'm finding a lot of publications being overly negative and a little boring as of late and I'm not sure why... straying away from them for the time being. The slate for the spring looks crazy packed too, I'm sure you won't have any problems finding yourself buried underneath an unending queue.
