Combining delicate piano, decaying lo-fi tape loops and ghostly vocals, Ian William Craig’s latest release is a hauntingly beautiful ambient record aptly suited to soundtrack this painfully somber period in time. [First added to this chart: 04/22/2020]

On Meg Remy released her first album, Introducing, back in 2008 but it took some time for her to really perfect her sound. The first couple of U.S. Girl records are pretty experimental and noisy, but there's little hints of what's to come in those releases. Her 2010 album Go Grey includes the standout track "Red Ford Radio." A decade later, Remy has included a new version of the song as the closing track on Heavy Light. The new context provides a new opportunity for a very good song to be heard, and the better production and arrangement strengthens it as well. She gives "State House (It's a Man's World)" from U.S. Girls on Kraak (2011) a similarly updated sound and context on Heavy Light.

Starting with Gem in 2012, Meg Remy has transformed U.S. Girls into one of the most exciting music projects around. She brilliantly blends the styles of classic girl groups, disco, 80s pop, dub, and much more, while sardonic and insightful lyrics about misogyny, capitalism and the patriarchy. Following the fiery perfection of Half Free and In A Poem Unlimited, Heavy Light further adds to U.S. Girls' unbelievable run of albums. This time around, Remy adopts a more melancholy tone.

Over a backdrop of krautrock style atmospheric synths and bouncing bass lines, Dan Bejar neurotically croons throughout his latest masterpiece, Have We Met. For those following Destroyer over the past 25 years, the album is a natural progression from the direction Bejar started with Kaputt, and continued evolving with Poison Season and Ken. But it's also pretty far removed from the project's earlier lo-fi roots. It's his continued push towards evolving as a musician that has not only kept Destroyer relevant 12 records deep, but which has also led to his most rewarding works. Just as Kaputt felt like a revelation, Have We Met appears to mark the start of a new period of Destroyer. As usual, Bejar's anxious lyrical wit acts as his greatest strength and the link that ties together his entire discography. This is Bejar at his best, and I'll never get tired these songs. Like many others, The Party was my introduction to Shauf. At first, I was left underwhelmed, but something kept drawing me back . Before I knew it, Shauf’s breakout album had become a listening obsession. His unique ability to lyrically paint a scene is captivating, and his sonic palette is pretty immaculate. The Foxwarren album that Shauf released with his old band further proved Shauf to be something special. I’ve had pretty high expectations for The Neon Skyline, leading up to its release. All of the elements that made Foxwarren and The Party a couple of my favorite records of the past decade are there, yet I’m not quite as enchanted so far. That isn’t to say there’s not quite a lot to enjoy. “Try Again” is quickly emerging as one of my favorite tracks Shauf has produced, and with each listen I’ve found more to enjoy. It’s hard to imagine fans not enjoying The Neon Skyline. [First added to this chart: 01/27/2020]

It took a couple listens to sink in, but Caribou's latest album has really won me over. One of the things that has made Dan Snaith's project so exciting over the years is that he has continuously reinvented his sound, incorporating new elements along the way. On the surface, Suddenly is a bright dance record built to get a crowd moving. just beneath that surface is a meticulously arranged experimental pop record in which Snaith's wide-ranging love of music is expressed beautifully. I'm just diving into Bandcamp this year. #1 source. I've heard some duds for sure, but it's been rewarding. I'm finding a lot of publications being overly negative and a little boring as of late and I'm not sure why... straying away from them for the time being. The slate for the spring looks crazy packed too, I'm sure you won't have any problems finding yourself buried underneath an unending queue.
