In 2016, Circuit des Yeux's Haley Fohr introduced her musical alter ego with Jackie Lynn. In comparison to the avant-garde sound of her primary project, Jackie Lynn was a more straightforward synthy country ballad record with Fohr's unique, powerful voice as the main link between the two projects. On her followup, Jacqueline, she injects a potent mix of disco into her sound, resulting in moments that can simultaneously recall Sparks and Fleetwood Mac. Though Circuit des Yeux remains her more thrilling musical pursuit, Jackie Lynn offers another rewarding side of Fohr's musical brilliance. [First added to this chart: 04/28/2020]

Katie Gately's spectacular production/sound design on Serpentwithfeet's debut album was one of the things that made that one of the most exciting albums I've heard in a past decade. On her own latest record, she takes a similarly intoxicating maximalist approach but with a far more somber tone. It's one of those albums that just explodes with sound, providing an auditory feast for even the most casual listener. [First added to this chart: 03/03/2020]

Back in 2008, when I first heard At War With Walls & Mazes, I had no idea of what to expect. It was unlike anything else I had heard at the time. There were elements of trip hop but Ryan Lott was really carving out his own path. As he continued on and expanded Son Lux to a trio with the additions of Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia, the project became even hard to pin down. Tomorrows I, the first in a 3 volume set to be released over the next year, shows the trio holding true to the cinematic melancholy sounds of prior records while they also exhibit more of their jazz sensibilities than ever. Draped in an aura of sadness, Tomorrows I is Son Lux at their most stunning. [First added to this chart: 09/20/2020]

Early into the pandemic, The Mountain Goats released Songs for Pierre Chuvin. The bare-bones record was delightfully reminiscent of John Darnielle's lo-fi roots. Getting Into Knives, their second full album of 2020, returns to the bright studio sound of recent Mountain Goats records. In fact, recorded at Sam Phillips studio in Memphis just before lockdowns began, The Mountain Goats have never sounded bigger than they do here. As usual. Darnielle's lyrics are the highlight, providing immersive tales worthy of far more than a casual listen. This is The Mountain Goats at their continued peak. [First added to this chart: 12/19/2020]

Christopher Paul Stelling is one of my best friends. These songs are insanely close to my heart. It’s impossible not to have bias. I’ve been lucky enough to watch his career blossom from a uniquely intimate perspective. The first time I ever saw him play, I knew I was seeing something special. Through obsessive dedication to his craft, he’s been able to harness influences that range from Mississippi bluesmen to Fahey to Cohen to Waits and beyond. While his debut Songs of Praise & Scorn set a phenomenally high bar, Stelling has repeatedly aimed higher with each record. With the help of Ben Harper’s production, Best Of Luck does an incredible job at highlighting Stelling’s strengths, as well the broad range of his songwriting. With tender folk ballads and heavier blues romps, Stelling’s 5th album is a dynamic listen that avoids the trap of unvaried monotony for the misguided sake of cohesion. While some of his past albums have focused on political issues, Best Of Luck may be his most introspective set of songs. Beneath an outer layer of anxiety comes an astute appreciation of the good things in life. [First added to this chart: 02/08/2020]

I’ve never really enjoyed Milo as much as his Hellfyre Club mates Busdriver and Open Mike Eagle, but recording here under the moniker R.A.P. Ferreira he has produced a hip hop masterpiece. The jazzy production and backing performance by the Jefferson Park Boys (Mike Parvizi, Aaron Carmack, and Kenny Segal) deserves a fair share of the credit. The trio provides the perfect backdrop for Milo to reach his full potential and shine. [First added to this chart: 04/03/2020]

I'm just diving into Bandcamp this year. #1 source. I've heard some duds for sure, but it's been rewarding. I'm finding a lot of publications being overly negative and a little boring as of late and I'm not sure why... straying away from them for the time being. The slate for the spring looks crazy packed too, I'm sure you won't have any problems finding yourself buried underneath an unending queue.
