Born to Run is Bruce Springsteen at his best - using poetry and fantastic instrumentals to paint a picture of American life, both at its most hopeful (Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, Born to Run) and aspects others would rather hide (Backstreets, Jungleland). Jungleland stands out in particular as Bruce finds art in the brutality and monotony of its content "there's an opera out on the turnpike, there's a ballet being fought out in the alley." Clarence Clemons' saxophone shines, as does the increased use of piano on the record. This record makes me happy, reminds me of childhood roadtrips, reminds me of home, and it's so good.

Bruce Springsteen's The Rising captures a passion and hopefulness in the shadow of the 9/11 attacks, and serves as a return to form for one of America's greatest artists whose work in the 90s left much to be desired (excluding Streets of Philadelphia). Lyrically, the album focuses on hope and human connection, while also acknowledging the great pain and loss of the moment.

Springsteen's biggest commercial hit also contains some of his most powerful songs. The pain and loss of songs like My Hometown, Born in the USA, and Glory Days ring even more true today, while the fun nature of I'm Goin' Down and Dancing In The Dark give us all something to dance to.
