The Strokes' debut Is This It is pure, timeless fun from front to back. This album revitalized its genre, won loads of critical acclaim, but never took itself too seriously. It's loud, it's distorted, it sounds like music you could make with your buddies in a garage but so much better, while keeping all the fun. Someday, Last Night, and Hard to Explain each merit consideration for best song of the 2000s, and every other song on the record is a banger.

Better than Kid A? Yes. In Rainbows is Radiohead's most consistent and cohesive work to date, every single song on it is incredible, and the album covers several musical styles from the upbeat 15 Step to the immersive Weird Fishes/Arpeggi to the somber Videotape to conclude the record. While OK Computer and Kid A may be more impactful on the music industry as a whole, In Rainbows serves as the Radiohead record I go back to the most for a re-listen, because it delivers every time.

Arcade Fire enters the musical arena with one of the best debut albums of all time, pairing complex, layered instrumentals with imaginative lyrics and phenomenal production. The second half of the record shines in particular, with each of the five songs flowing seamlessly into one another and showcasing the unique talents of the band, highlighted by the cathartic Wake Up and Rebellion (Lies).

Sufjan Stevens somehow finds a way to take a concept of "the state of Illinois" and created a sonic masterpiece. The instrumentals on this record are in contention for the best of any album ever, and the lyrics brilliantly leverage key Illinois figures and their stories as well as elements of Sufjan's own life to build a truly immersive piece. In a track listing with some comically long titles, Chicago stands out as one of the best songs of the 2000s.

The soundscape of boxer is broody yet energetic, with more mellow songs like Fake Empire and Slow Show complimented by Mistaken by Strangers and Apartment Story. The dense instrumentation compliments the jaded lyrics of love and isolation.

Kid A is Radiohead's boldest record and arguably its most haunting. Lyrically it paints a picture of a cold, soulless dystopia where everyone is out for themselves regardless of harm to others, while Radiohead deploys computerized instrumentals to build on the theme. Its best moments (Idioteque, Everything in its Right Place, How to Disappear Completely) are some of the best of the deep Radiohead discography, but this lacks the consistency of OK Computer and In Rainbows to be higher on this ranking.

Phoenix's hit record is some of the most fun and consistent indie pop of the 2000s. 1901 and Lisztomania remain timeless classics, and others like Lasso, Armistice, and Love Like a Sunset create a series of earworms I'm happy to revisit any day
