Is Ben Folds an absolute genius? Pretty tough to argue against that. This is a man who seems to easily succeed at everything he tries…acting, rock music, classical music, comedy, being in a band, being a solo artist. Ben Folds just makes everything look easy. After the first ending of his trio, Ben Folds Five, he released his first solo album, Rockin’ The Suburbs, on the unfortunate date of September 11, 2001. One of only five of the solo albums he’s recorded, this one may be the best of those. One thing that Folds is not is a hitmaker, but that’s okay. He makes coherent albums that are always worth listening to. On Rockin’ The Suburbs, it’s all Folds…he plays every instrument (except for a guitar part or two), and adds a pair of guest singers (including John McCrea of Cake of “Fred Jones Part 2”). Truly a solo album, Folds proves here how talented he really is.
The nu-metal parody of the title track is more fun than you get from most albums. “Still Fighting It” is another standout. Folds likes to use names of people in his song titles, both real and imagined. You get the impression that his writing is honest and informed, filled with interesting stories and ideas. Folds rarely falters, something he does not do here. He’s really a genius, he’s funny, articulate, and endlessly musical. This is as good a place to start with his music as anywhere. If this works for you, then it’s not a far jump to his band albums and his many collaborations with others (William Shatner’s Has Been album is surprisingly listenable…that’s thanks to Ben Folds). Rockin’ The Suburbs is a fine album, one that rewards repeated listens. Definitely recommended. [First added to this chart: 02/04/2025]
