VARIOUS PRODUCERS
Elias Bates became known as Elias McDaniel, then became famous as Bo Diddley, becoming one of rock & roll’s early pioneers and stars. He made his own guitars, produced his own records without getting credit for it, and gave the world the Bo Diddley Beat…as well as a slew of great songs. Bo Diddley was always overshadowed by the Elvis Presleys and Chuck Berrys of the world, but his recorded legacy speaks for itself. This man was a giant, and is a big reason why rock & roll flourished and survived. His time recording for Chess during the 1950’s and early to mid 60’s produced some of rock & roll’s greatest songs.
The Chess Box is a 45 song masterpiece. The man’s entire career is housed on two discs (and some pretty great liner notes) in some great packaging. Every one of these songs rings true, and the genius of Bo Diddley is stunning when you can hear it all in one place. From the early (1955) “Bo Diddley” and “I’m A Man” to mid 60’s rockers like “500% More Man” and “Ooh Baby”, and even the latter day “Bo Diddley 1969”, you get a man who always stayed true to his style. His style was greatness, and this collection is the best way to have it all. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2024]

The Floodplain Gang was a band from Boulder, CO. There isn’t much known about them, but here’s what I was able to find. In 1998, they were the winners of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest. They played Telluride again in 1999, did some touring, and they had a pair of live shows in Boulder in 2000 at the Fox Theater. They apparently had a decent local following. After that? There’s nothing. They did, however, release a single album. In 1998, Blind Ride showcased the band as an interesting mix of bluegrass, jazz, and lots of jam band qualities that got them mentioned in the same breath as bands like String Cheese Incident. It’s a strange listen…bluegrass instruments with sax solos, with songs leaning more towards Dave Matthews than Bill Monroe.
You won’t find anything close to a hit here, and it’s fairly easy to see why this music didn’t gain a larger audience. The playing is very good, as are the vocals, but it’s tough to get behind the songs. The best of the lot are “Jimtown Rag” and “Riff Race”. The band lineup consists of guitar, bass, drums, mandolin, and a percussionist. What happened to them? They appear to have vanished into thin air sometime in 2000. The video below is from an independent show called FreeFormTV, which shows the band playing live. That’s it. The band was John Turpin, Krista Smith, Eric Walser, Heath Graham and Dan Senyvesi. Turpin has been maybe seen selling real estate in New Jersey…who knows? Blind Ride is a small band’s blip on the musical radar. A local band too soon forgotten. Grant Lee Buffalo may have been a band of the nineties, but their roots were in the decade before. Known previously as Shiva Burlesque, they had very little success before the decade rolled over, bassist Paul Kimble joined, and the took on their new name. Grant Lee Buffalo was led by Grant-Lee Phillips, and they made four albums in the nineties before splitting up. Copperopolis was their third album. And like much of what the band did in their career, it was met with general disinterest. The record has a dark sound, somewhat comparable to Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The songs are good, but there’s nothing that will jump out at you. What Grant Lee Buffalo ultimately was turned out to be good but unremarkable music in a sea of 90’s alternative rock hitmakers.
Still, Copperopolis is worth hearing. “Homespun” is the best song here, and while there are no hits to be found, there’s enough good music on the record to make you happy. It’s extremely well played and well written…It’s just not very memorable. Which was, ultimately, what led to the end of the band. Phillips, who is Native American on both sides, has gone on to have a much more successful and lengthy solo career. After they ended with the nineties, Grant Lee Buffalo did reform for live shows in the early 2010’s, but nothing since 2014. Their four albums from the nineties (Fuzzy, Might Joe Moon and Jubilee are the others) are all worth checking out, but they were a band that always fell just short of the big time. You can find their best on the 2001 compilation Storm Hymnal. [First added to this chart: 09/30/2024]
