60/100
Another decent singer-songwriter album, Maple Glider aka Tori Zietsch showcases her talent as well as her shortcomings on TEITOT. Most of the stuff is pretty forgettable, but not always. Be Mean It's Kinder Than Crying is the biggest wtf-moment I've heard on wanna these kind of records in a while, a mixture of Suicide and nauseating 80s ballad vocal effect set to folk. On the other side, the cute and semi-tender View From This Side, the rich Good Thing where Tori goes from a steady belt to breathiness on the verge of wordless whisper, and the beautifully potent Swimming (eminent folk combined with an almost new age melody, 4 slow minutes that feel like 2) are standing out from the crowd. More that please.
Albeit derivative, her voice is windy and soothing. Albeit unoriginal, the instrumentation lives in the same universe. And although half of the album contains compositional and melodic build-up that are lifeless, the best songs are close to bullseye. I cannot knock Tori's lyricism either, the lines don't make for an emotional jolt but that's fine, nearly every song here got lyrics that reveal something either of Tori's thought-process or backstory, and she never puts blame or have emotional manipulation. On for example Good Thing Tori reflects a bit on bad decisions, As Tradition references struggles with Christian upbringing, and don't forget the longing for comfort and unique atmosphere in life that Baby Tiger and Performer are about, or the comparison of the sea to relationships in Swimming (Bathing in the sea / Searching for fish while you're searching for me [...] I almost fell apart when you looked straight at my hеart / And said baby, swim), Friend have some references to the danger of expectations, Mama It's Christmas has Tori asking child-y of her gone siblings, and View From This Side notes the imperfect yet delightful sides of parenthood. So there is something going on, but again if she doesn't up her game in melody and composition, then it would suit her better to write short-stories or to join a cool jazz band.
