"Blue" was my intro to Joni, I just melted. But I grew out of it, it was just too sad. I wanted redemption. This is what Mitchell gives us in "For The Roses". It's a masterpiece depicting the light at the end of the tunnel. Banquet is phenomenal, "Some get the gravy And some get the gristle Some get the marrow bone And some get nothing Though there's plenty to spare". A line that sums up humanity like no other I can think of. Joni was always pressured to create "hits", when deep inside she had more pure emotions to emit through her work. This album showcases it like no other in her collection. Her piano work here is beyond amazing, probably amongst the best pianist work of the 20th Century. It is so depressing how over looked this fact is alone, in addition to her more commercial albums overshadowing it. This is as real as you can get folks, an album like no other. I used to listen to her entire collection with love, but now because "For The Roses" set my standards so high, I can no longer. "Lesson In Survival/Let The Wind Carry Me" is just pure ecstasy. So raw, beautiful, deep, and real. "Ludwig's Tune", hence the name is a homage to Beethoven like no other. "Condemned to wires and hammers Strike every chord that you feel That broken trees And elephant ivories conceal" By passing up this album, you are dismissing music at it's very best. You must give this album a try, even if it is not on par to your standards at first listen. That is the true sign of advanced music, it must soak in. You will not regret the investment in multiple listenings, this is a life changer. "  [+]  Reply

With two of the group's biggest and most timeless hits "Mama Mia" and "SOS" is the album can only be a five star release. On top of that are other big hits, which are almost as strong as the two. "So Long" is possibly the best rock 'n roll number ever recorded by Abba. "Bang-a-Boomerang" was only released as a single in selected countries, but it is a near perfect pop production, and quite on a par with many of the group's biggest hits. "I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do" was also a big hit in many places. A retro-inspired number (a little Fats Domino), only to a certain extent featuring the well known, the Abba sound. "I've Been Waiting For You" is a very nice ballad that anticipates the direction the group would explore later with songs like "Thank You For the Music", an obvious musical number. "Hey, Hey Helen" is an attempt at more heavy tones - and for once the group is quite successful with this. A little overlooked gem. A few numbers come slightly in the more trivial department, but you easily bear with this. "Tropical Loveland" and "Man in the Middle" I will put in this category, though I would not call any of them weak. The instrumental "Intermezzo no. 1 "is exciting enough, but may seem a little misplaced on an Abba album."  [+]  Reply

"This is the sunniest collection from a master, and this album is also notable for the restraint he exercises here - no song is longer than four minutes. I love the opening of "Starting a New Life"...."when I hear that robin sing, well, I know it's coming on spring..." Later in the album he sings "Twenty-third of December Covered in snow/ You in the kitchen With the lights way down low/ I'm in the parlor playing my old guitar/ Speaking to you, darling, to find out how you are" Those two instances alone would make this the lightest Van on record but then there is Cannonball and Evening Sun and Moonshine Whiskey. The title track is a gorgeous love song very comparable to Crazy Love and you have to agree that Wild Night is one of his best ever singles. And for all those highlights there is not one skippable track on the rest of this. Underrated, oh yes."  [+]  Reply

Very often the group has given even the most beautiful melodies a twist or edge which contrasts the ugly and the beautiful. This tendency, or intention, is also very evident in this, the group's fourth album. The group mixes genres in new and challenging ways, and while some passages may be an ordeal for many to give ear to, other pieces of the same track can be melodic beauty and sheer pleasure. On this album, my two biggest favorites both have these extremes. The opening track "Formentary Lady" has a nice, slightly gloomy intro, played on cello and it builds up very classically inspired. The actual song is melodic, and you easily find yourself humming lines from the delicate and catchy melody. The song gradually develops towards the more discordant, and towards the end the saxophone play notes that may behard to grasp. Although many probably would feel it an assault on the track, I have chosen to make my own edited version - down to about five minutes; then my family wil also be able to be nearby when the track is playing. The same thing could be done to "Ladies on the Road" which is my absolute favorite. Like "Formentary Lady" the song takes a similar turn towards the end. Still "Ladies on the Road" has everything you could ask for: a bluesy half-acoustic intro, great electric "Come Together" verses, and a beautiful chorus, which reminds me a lot of Pretty Things' "Parachute" album. The saxophone takes over towards the end, and "ruins" some of the song's beauty - some would feel There are two instrumental, with the "Sailor's Life" as the most exciting, but also the most challenging for the listener. Again experiments on saxophone and later the electric guitar playing notes I have never heard other places. "Prelude: Song of the Sea" is a very quiet classical number, which could very easily be overlooked. Nice but not really memorable The title track is another quiet number which is really very nice, but which perhaps lacks a real memorable melody. "The Letters" has good element but the song does not really hit me. "  [+]  Reply

"Brilliant first album by Foreigner. I think the later efforts possibly have greater highs but no album beats this one as all tracks are of a consistently high quality. Favourites are obviously the hits but also The Damage Is Done, Fool For You Anyway and I Need You."  Reply
