- Mass Romantic by The New Pornographers (nr 42 on the overall BEA top chart of 2000): I quite liked this little charming album by this little charming band: it's nothing special but it's good and heartwarming.
- Mama's Gun by Erykah Badu (nr 43): sometimes it's a bit better than contemporary R&B but in many other instances it's just the same, so not my taste at all
- He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Ligh...r Mt. Zion (nr 44): overall a bit of a boring album although the general atmosphere especially on the violin parts is not bad
- Veni Vidi Vicious by The Hives (nr 45): this is not the most serious band in the world but this is good fun punk and enormously entertaining
- Quality Control by Jurassic 5 (nr 46): another hiphop album
- Internal Wrangler by Clinic (nr 48 ): bit of a weird album but doesn't remain interesting the whole time.
- Odyssey Number Five by Powderfinger (nr 51): Except for Up & Down & Back again there is nothing special about this album.
- 100 Broken Windows by Idlewild (nr 52): These Wooden Ideas is good and the rest is ok but this album doesn't really promise to stick in my memory so I decided not to include it in my personal top chart
- We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes by Death Cab For Cutie (nr 53): and this album is just on that other side of good, ie some of their later albums are better but there are some good songs on it like Title Track and the last three tracks.
- Pop by Gas (nr 55): sorry this is just boring electronic music.
And this is my last contribution for albums of 2000 I listened to and only one left to comment on:
- Flood by Boris (nr 56 in the overall BEA top chart of 2000 and the last album with an overall rank better than 2500): it's atmospheric and there are some very good guitar parts in it but this album is 70 minutes long which is 60 minutes too long because the rest is just drifting away.

And if you look closely at the top you will see that I have mentioned the first album, Illinois, as already listened which means that I own it but had originally found it not to be good enough to appear in my personal top chart of 2000 of which I was a bit ashamed because of all the praise it gets on BEA and elsewhere. So I decided to listen to it again:
- Illinois by Sufjan Stevens (nr 1 in the BEA top chart of 2005): and I listened to it again and I must admit it's just beautiful. Of course there is a bit of filler on it but it nevertheless still comes over as a unity and it certainly deserves and should be in my personal top chart.
The next album I wil listen to is Demon Days by Gorillaz.

- Demon Days by Gorillaz (nr 2 on the overall BEA top chart of 2005): Feel Good Inc and especially Last Living Souls are good and even sound a bit like Damon Albarn 🤣 but the rest of the album and the Gorillaz in general are not really my thing
- Late Registration by Kanye West (nr 6) more rap/hiphop
- Feels by Animal Collective (nr 9): also not really an album I like
- Deadwing by Porcupine Tree (nr 11): I've been doing some progrock bashing in previous posts and manurock was tipping me a few progrock albums I might like and this was one of those. I had never listened to Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson before and I said then that I didn't really like it either. Since then I've discovered quite some PT/SW albums and I must say I've become a fan of a few of them. So I decided to give this album a re-listen and I must say I still don't really like it. Arriving Somewhere but Not Here is very good in the tradition of some of the other albums but the rest of the tracks is still a bit too proggy for me.
- Z by My Morning Jacket (nr 14): 2 of my favorite MMJ tracks appear on this album: Dondante and especially Lay Low. The rest of the album is not so good but still good enough to make this album a must-have in my personal top chart of 2005.
- Wolfmother by Wolfmother (nr 16): this album contains Woman which is already a plus but there are also some other mighty good riffy tracks available like Where Eagles Have Been. So another fine album for inclusion in my personal top chart
- Picaresque by The Decemberists (nr 19): A number of the track are quite listenable but the overall quality of the album is not up to standard to me.
- In Between Dreams by Jack Johnson (nr 20): there's no inventiveness at all in this album.
And more albums of 2005:
- Guero by Beck (nr 24 on the overall BEA top chart of 2005): this album is back to basics for Beck and that is not my favorite Beck. I liked his former albums like Sea Change more. So I won't include this album in my personal top chart.
- The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats (nr 25): not bad but not completely my taste this album
- A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At The Disco (nr nr 26): and I can give completely the same comment for this album
- Be by Common (nr 28 ): more rap/hiphop
- With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails (nr 34): I ready many comments that this album is not as revolutionary as other NIN albums but to me it's a really good one: it's dark and brooding and both the harder and the slower tracks on this album really appeal to me and even more: I like all the songs although there's not really an outlier.
- Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple (nr 35): again not bad but nothing really special
- Twin Cinema by The New Pornographers (nr 37): Their debut Mass Romantic I only recently discovered as well is better but there still are many very good tracks on this third album of theirs. Especially near the end there are some really good songs.
The next album to listen to is Gimme Fiction by Spoon.

- Everything In Transit by Jack's Mannequin (nr 41): I don't really understand the reference made with Ben Folds. This is just your plain old juvenile rock with sometimes a bit of piano.
- Ghost Reveries by Opeth (nr 42): I don't think I like Opeth: the mix between death metal and prog is just too much for me.
The next album to listen to is Octavarium by Dream Theater.

I like your thread. Enjoy Octavarium, it;s the record that got me into Dream Theater. As with any DT record there are moments of supreme tediousness and some slight cheese but overall I'd say Octavarium is one of their best. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

- Octavarium by Dream Theater (nr 44 on the overall BEA top chart of 2005): I think I most agree with your comment on how tedious DT can be but there is one great track on this album with a very good guitar solo, Never Enough, and also the title track is not bad. The rest is really not my thing because overlong noodling in my view.
- City Of Evil by Avenged Sevenfold (nr 45): but I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. I suppose I had underestimated this band completely but this I'm a real sucker for that dual guitar attack that they do on nearly every track on this album. They sound a bit like Iron Maiden but maybe without that epic songwriting but somehow the tracks sound great anyway, even the slower ones which start off as a bit cheesy but also grow on you once you get into them. Only the two last tracks are not of the same quality as the rest of the album but this is just a great discovery and I'm looking forward to discovering more of their albums (although I suppose that this is their best).
- Don't Believe The Truth by Oasis (nr 46): again one of those latter Oasis albums that is not at all as good as their first ones but contains some good track and is just good enough to be likeable enough to include in my personal top chart.
- Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volum...nd Cambria (nr 47): Oh Lord, this is again one of those noodling prog albums I really don't like at all.
- Arular by M.I.A. (UK) (nr 48 ): not really my taste.
- The Campfire Headphase by Boards Of Canada (nr 52): boring electronic album
- Modal Soul by Nujabes (nr 53): this hiphop album does have a bit of soul for a change but still not really the soul I like.

Are there eras or artists that you dislike less or find more, say, soulful or electric I aspects in? Are there any rappers which you like the lyrical content of more than others? Or is every album you're listening to that is hip hop for this project sound almost the same and they're just a chore? Has there been any song you've liked a bit more than you expected? Hi Mercury, I've been listening to all these hip hop albums but to be honest I skipped quickly through most of them which means I try to listen to a few tracks completely and then try just to get the feel of the other ones by listening only to parts of them (and like I said this Nujabes was a fairly pleasant surprise because I actually felt some heartfelt soul).
I do think that people like Stevie Wonder and then of course after them performers like Grand Master Flash and so on laid the foundations and were actually very good at it but what I fail to understand is that what I see a bit as a gimmick (ie rapping, scratching and sampling which I all see as a bit derivative music) has turned into a genre.
I certainly recognize the cultural value of the genre and the fact that for many people it became a way to express themselves as well by performing or by following the general culture around it, but I have to admit it's a bit far from my world.
I know that many people find that these last years a few masterpieces in the genre have been created: Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West etc and I really tried to get into these albums, but I failed. I still have the feeling that the tone of most of these albums are or self-indulgent or self-pitying to a point where it gets a bit of a parody and where many albums seem to be copies of other ones (themselves already being samples of other albums).
But I can only repeat what I always say: no matter what people sometimes say, it's the fact that there are so many musical tastes represented on this site which makes it so interesting to make it by far my most favorite music site these past two years I've been active on it and I suppose I'm already a bit too old to suddenly change my mind.
