For my money this is a very very good album. From top to bottom it really holds up. "Gravity" is a highlight, unbelievable blues guitar there. "Vultures" and "I Don't Trust Myself With Loving You" have a very well executed soul/funk sound with excellent guitar work. The acoustic/folk on "Heart of Life" and "Stop this Train" is stellar , and just really really well done. The blues riffs and leads are pretty much all spot on. The guitar work in "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" is really incredibly emotional. The song "Dreaming with A Broken Heart" is gorgeous too! And the 2 really socially conscious songs "Waiting On The World To Change" and "Belief" are excellent. The first of those has been a bit overplayed, but still good. And "Belief" may be the emotional and artistic high point of the album (either that or "Gravity"). All in all this record features very good songwriting, great guitar playing, a very varied and symmetrical flow and sound. It's by far John Mayer's best album in my opinion. Probably most of the criticism this album gets is based off reputation and not the music itself. Yeah, if you only wanna listen to cool music, maybe you'll avoid this because it says John Mayer on it. But that's actually dumb. Although that's a crime I myself may be guilty of. For all I know lady gaga or Katy perry have made BRILLIANT albums that I've never listened to because I just don't go for that. So, I do understand that some pop stars put a certain stigma on records even before you've heard them. But i just wanna say this dude was and is very talented and this is a brilliant brilliant album. When I get enough "points" to do decade lists you'll see this on my top albums of the 2000s definitely! I will say a couple tracks at the end of the record slow the momentum on the album. The pseudo-soul of "I'm gonna find another you" I just can't get into. But ladies and gentlemen, I assure you this is a very good record!"  [+]  Reply

While this album does have a fair amount of pop appeal (looking at the production on Big Fish, as well as Rain Come Down as a whole), it manages to very much have its own sound. While this album does have a fair amount of pop appeal (looking at the production on Big Fish, as well as Rain Come Down as a whole), it manages to very much have its own sound. "Yeah Right" is contagiously energetic and bombastic to no end, "Love Can Be" rocked my world with its crisp and slick production the first time I heard it, and Both "Big Fish" and "Bagbak" serve as persistent earworms. On top of all of this, Vince's originality with both his flows his lyrics never fail to hold my attention. Obviously, this album isn't perfect and isn't without its flaws. The album starts to lose steam during "Samo" (though I still like this song) and especially "Party people", and I also wouldn't say that I was a gigantic fan of "Rain Come Down either". Every song on here possesses something that you will enjoy and every track is at least good if not better. Their build up is sensational and they really allow every song to properly breathe which gives us a fantastic experience. The instrumentation is beautiful and is such a high level that it mesmerises me in places. This is exemplified on Song Within A Song and Air Born which are both just phenomenal. We are also treated to a varied display of instruments as well, all of which are played brilliantly with the flute being a personal favourite of mine. The flow of the music is very smooth as well with it feeling very cohesive and by the end you feel like you have had a true journey. However, I do think the final track Lunar Sea is a bit weaker than all the other ones as it starts slow but the final 4 minutes of that song does redeem it a little. Overall, a fantastic prog rock album that I enjoy every time I play it and it deserves so much more praise than it receives. "  [+]  Reply

"I rate the UK version of this album as their third best of the sixties after Let it Bleed and Beggars Banquet. Despite losing Satisfaction, Play with Fire and The Last Time I just feel the UK version flows better. Some of the replacements aren't too shabby anyway...Heart of Stone, Gotta Get Away and I'm Free are all great Jagger/Richards compositions plus you don't have the live track that you get in the middle of the US version. For me 'Out of Our Heads' feels really vibrant and is stronger than Aftermath, I never really got Between the Buttons (a bit pompous) or Satanic (psychedelia didn't really suit them)...the Stones are best when they're bluesy right? Anyway whatever version you're familiar with can you imagine a combined version with all 6 of those songs in the track listing...something like 1. The Last Time 2. Mercy Mercy 3. Hitch Hike 4.
