Was not a big fan of the vocals initially, but her delivery and tone have really grown on me with repeated listens. Biggest problem I still have with this one are the several tracks with heavy dance/house beats. Feels like some standard "club" music and it's not really my cup of tea. However, she does make some interesting stylistic choices here and there on those tracks to make them tolerable and even enjoyable at moments for me. I'm in the minority in that Big Time Sensuality was a low point for me. Joining in the herd on Venus as a Boy - that track is fantastic. My favorite section of the album though was the string of One Day->Aeroplane->Come to Me. Overall there is a nice diversity of styles here and I like the flow from track to track even if not every track was a win for me. Though I tend to prefer dark, brooding, depressive themes, I really dig the positive vibes on this one. There is a childlike innocence and energy here that gives power to the messaging on tracks like Human Behavior, One Day, and Come to Me. I read that Bjork had actually written some of this material as a kid/teen. I don't feel like it's a corporate motivational speaker selling me cliches. More like a good friend who really believes in me. Also somehow I've come to rather enjoy the Anchor Song. All said, a solid album that has potential as a grower for me over time. Excited to explore more of her discography when I eventually find the time."  [+]  Reply

The three original members were all experienced songwriters and great singers, and with Neil Young on top of the hat, it could hardly go wrong; and It did not. All four members contribute two songs each. Moreover, the two old friends from Buffalo Springfield, Stills and Young together wrote the finale number, "Everybody I Love You". Finall they recorded a cover-version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" . The Woodstock Festival was an event the four members took an active part in. There is a lot to go for on this album, not least the beautiful harmony vocal arrangements. The songwriting is also of very high class. Both Nash's contributions are among the best he has written, "Our House" is great and "Teach Your Children" has probably already become a classic, covered by several other artists Both Neil Young's songs are also very fine - in particular the very moving to "Helpless". Still's upbeat "Carry On" is a perfect opening number. A complex composition that shows many different facets of the group. His quiet acoustic "4 and 20" is a sweet little song and one of the simplest on the album. I've always had it a bit difficult with David Crosby's songs. They often seem somewhat convoluted. "Almost Cut My Hair" is a blues-like number, very well arranged, but with corny hippie-like lyrics. The titletrack is more unconventional - again with a somewhat pretentious lyrics. The closing-track "Everybody I Love You" - sounds much like a Steve Stills number, almost as good as the opening-track. "Woodstock" is probably the most rocking song on the album - strong but perhaps not as interesting as the group's own original songs."  [+]  Reply

It is very tough to follow an album as good as Ten is and you can see they struggled a little to figure out which way they wanted to take the music. Once the record gets started though we are kicked right into a storm with 2 extremely energetic tracks which are possibly my favourite on the record. This really gives us an idea of what the rest of the album is going to be like and they follow this pattern, to a varying degree of success, on the rest of the tracks. It can be a bit up and down in spells but when the group get going they really create some powerful and enjoyable songs. Songs like Daughter and Rearviewmirror are prime examples of this and are very catchy. It does drag on a little too long for me however and it is let down by some filler cuts. Overall, this flies a little under the radar of some listeners due to the quality of Ten even though it deserves a lot of praise and is a very strong follow up. "  [+]  Reply

In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word...""Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word) that it had the air of something new and important. It wasn't at all- it had the substance and danger of a Hot Topic halloween party with dime-store shrooms. So what actually made the shoulda-been-a-trainwreck it worthwhile? Well... it was actually a lot of fun. Reviving the grand 'ol concept album formula, glam-rock poses and arena-metal that probably shoulda died with the early 80s, it apes every Big Fucking Band of the era- Iron Maiden, Supertramp, T. Rex, Danzig/Misfits, and hell there's even the Tom Waits bastard stepson of "Mama" (yes, that's Liza Minelli singing backup) but none so more than the undisputed kings of extravagant excess and Everything's Gotta Be An Anthem skin of Queen. The opener The End basically seems like the begginings of Ziggy Stardust and The Wall ran into each other, become one unholy monster walking away with blurred vision and a bloody nose. There's no way this album should've worked, but miraculously it did. Mainly cause it does mix solid songwriting with a sorta adorable sense of over-the-top surface grandeur that makes it a really entertaining spectacle, if rarely a substantive one. Not as strange or groundbreaking as it wanted to be, it nonetheless came across as a strong new millenium arena-rock album in spite of it's conspicious flaws. I may never enjoy it as much as I did when... I WAS..... A YOUNG BOYYYYYY!!!, but it's still fun to come back to once and again. "  [+]  Reply

The hits still sound great but the remaining tracks sound , well ...very 80's .
