"Foot of the Mountain is in the running for my favourite A-ha album of the 2000s, the only one that rivals it at all being the brilliant 'Analogue'. This little gem of an album starts off with 'Bandstand' which is one of the weaker tracks, but still good nonetheless. Then we get the catchy ballad ...""Foot of the Mountain is in the running for my favourite A-ha album of the 2000s, the only one that rivals it at all being the brilliant 'Analogue'. This little gem of an album starts off with 'Bandstand' which is one of the weaker tracks, but still good nonetheless. Then we get the catchy ballad 'Riding the Crest' followed by 'What There is', again one of the less noteworthy tracks. Then the album really kicks into gear with the brilliant title track which is one of their best pop singles since the early days. After which we have another really good track titled 'Real Meaning' and continue this run of quality with 'Shadowside', which is one of the best on the album. Then we have a bit of a drop-off with 'Nothing is Keeping You Here', which is about as good as 'What There is' and 'The Bandstand'. After this we get a sudden jolt back into masterful territory with the best track on the album 'Mother Nature goes to Heaven', a beautiful, lush piece with lyrics as good as it's instrumentation. After this we get 'Sunny Mystery' which is nice followed by 'Start the Simulator', a great way to close the album. Overall, this album feels like an A-ha album through and through. It's fun, catchy and there are enough great songs to keep you coming back for more. Highly recommend it. "  [+]  Reply

Joe Jackson is not a major artist - if you haven't heard this album. This live collection, taken from four different tours (one per side), makes a strong case that he *is* a major artist of his time. In contrast to the sparse, pub-rock arrangements of his first two albums, from which about half of these tracks are taken, the live versions are sumptuously re-arranged with more sympathetic singer-songwriter richness. A key example of this is what I call the "Hill Street Blues" re-arrangement of "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" on side one. While the original is a classic in its own right, this newer arrangement is even more resonant. And there are two more arrangements of the same song - an a cappella arrangement with vocals substituted for the instruments on side two, and an "acoustic" arrangement with interesting instrumentation on side three. The ballads from Night and Day are all superior here - high praise indeed - and the brass-less version of "You Can't Get What You Want" is not better than the studio version per se, but it is rather fascinating in terms of how they pull it off. The only major misstep here is the plodding re-arrangement of "Steppin' Out" from the 1986 tour. If I had been at that show and he played that garbage (the studio version is the best thing he ever did), I would have howled for my money back - and that's in spite of all the great music everywhere else on the album. Overall, though, the album is a great sonic resume for Jackson's strong talents as a singer, arranger, and especially songwriter, given how these arrangements complement the songs so much better than many of the studio versions. And, oh, side one rocks with the best of them."  [+]  Reply

With respect to music and lyrics they might even be more relevant than ever before. An unrelenting, thunderous rhythm section (Pumping bass. Impeccable drumming) shows the way by supporting stunning, brooding, hunting and quite angry guitar riffs. Very strong and perfectly fitting vocals (Jaz Coleman sounding in top form) transfer the kind of dystopian messages we can expect from KJ. As always they’ve got a lot to say about these modern times, but they refuse to be fatalistic. “New Cold War” tells how the US and Russia are confronting one another again. Pretty prophetic I would say. In Autonomous zone however, the band expresses its belief in humanitarian values. The balance of very well produced guitars and the outstanding melodies from the vocals are brilliant. There simply isn’t one filler on this heavy and uncompromising album. Pylon is one of KJ’s finest deliveries and will go down in history with the greats."  [+]  Reply
