The music is great, and more importantly, Chance’s rapping ability is great. He has a playful youthfulness to him, but isn’t afraid to get serious. Perhaps the line that really stuck in my head most is from the second half of “Pusha Man", in which Chance raps about his hometown of the south side of Chicago: “They be shooting whether it’s dark or not, I mean the days is pretty dark a lot/Down here it’s easier to find a gun than find a fucking parking spot" and later, “Everybody dies in the summer/Wanna say your goodbyes, tell them while it’s spring". It’s really reflective, and pretty sad. But Chance takes the sadness and bad circumstances he was born into and works through them, eventually making light of them, adding a bit of levity to the situation. There’s some great guest appearances on this album, most notably the appearances of Childish Gambino and Action Bronson, both of whom do really well."  [+]  Reply

The jangly guitars dominate, a sound that The Beatles had used on the previous year's, what you're doing, on their, Beatles for sale, LP. As for the album itself, there are some great songs here, a third from the pen of Bob Dylan, including the stunning, Mr. Tambourine man, which takes Dylan's folk classic and turns it into a catchy pop hit. There's, chimes of freedom, and, all I really want to do(I'm still not sure about that middle eight), and, Spanish Harlem incident. Best of the originals is, I feel a whole lot better, and, here without you. There are a few throwaway's, but that was how it was then, still, an important album which would kick of a barrage of folk rock tracks but the Byrds are the original and best. "  [+]  Reply

The amount of different sounds they tackle on this album is staggering. The playing is fantastic especially the drums. Clearly Like Herod and Mogwai Fear Satan are the big guns here if you’re thinking purely crescedo- core Post Rock with their head banging payoffs. Like Herod in particular reminds me at times of Sister-era Sonic Youth, Godflesh, and a more Kim Thayil focused Soundgarden. But the other tracks are killer too. Katrien is like Velvet Underground’s the Gift set to ferocious post rock and the drumming is superlative. Then there’s Radar Maker’s haunting, emotive piano and Summer’s Slint & Filosofem-style Burzum mashup. Tracy is simply drop dead gorgeous, and With Portfolio stuns with a white noise loop that seems to shoot from speaker to speaker. Then R U Still In It finally answers the question of what would happen if either Kurt Wagner (Lambchop) or Stuart Staples (Tindersticks) had decided to front a post-rock band. A Cheery Wave sounds like Faith-era The Cure if Robert Smith had been, um.. cheery. Finally, Mogwai Fear Satan recalls MBV era Loveless and probably most likely influenced Justin Broadrick’s Jesu. That’s a lot of ground to cover in just one hour. Highly Recommended! ****"  [+]  Reply

Brian May also contributes another rocker in, white man, which features some fantastic guitar. Freddie Mercury also contributes three of his best with, the glorious gospel rock of, somebody to love, the high camp of, good old fashioned lover boy, and his beautiful ballad, you take my breath away, which I think is even better than love of my life from the last album. Elsewhere Roger Taylor's, drowse, is an underrated gem. The closing, teo torriate, is a lovely singalong . I still feel that, the millionaire waltz, is a lesser version of bo rhap, and same goes for John Deacon's, you and I, in comparison with, you're my best friend. All in all, not quite as good as a night at the opera, but still a very good album. "  [+]  Reply

There is obviously no doubt that it's Steely Dan is playing, but the album has a unique sound and sentiment and it is very homogeneous. This does not mean that all songs are equally good. There are clearly tracks you remember better than others; actually there is a couple of songs which are not very memorable on their own; but in the context of "Gaucho" they work fine. The title-track "Gaucho" probably won't be the first song your attention is drawn towards, on the other hand, it could easily turn out to be the song you'll want to re-hear most often with its Incredibly beautiful horn-theme, and of course the song itself is actually very catchy and classic Steely Dan. "Third World Man", was my first favourite, and it is a song of durability too. "Hey Nineteen" is probably the most commercial and catchy number. Nice funky rhythm with some nice blues guitar. "Babylon Sisters" is both funky and dramatic, while "My Rival" is both catchy and has a good funky riff. "Glamor Profession" and "Time Out of Mind " are fine well-produced tracks, which probably do not quite have special qualities of the rest of the album. After "Gaucho" the group took a break for nearly twenty years until "Two Against Nature" in 2000. So for many years "Gaucho" was thought of as a farewell work - and a very commendable one of its kind. Fortunately, Becker and Fagen are together again, and they have so far recorded two more fine albums."  [+]  Reply
