Having never been to New Orleans, I tend to overlook zydeco as a major strain in Americana music, especially in recent years. But after seeing him play live at the wonderful Albino Skunk Music Festival, I've found it impossible to ignore D.B. Rielly. He brings incredible musicianship, an understated approach to songcraft, and a diverse musical approach--and the results are satisfying. For me the most fun song on this album is "Roadrunner," which I had for a long time on a beloved playlist called The Animal Years, a collection of tunes dedicated to a variety of animal species. The roadrunner just doesn't get enough love, Bugs Bunny cartoons notwithstanding.
