If you have the vinyl of Sugar and are worried about missing out on "Gibraltar," fear not as Turrentine put a new cut of "Gibraltar" on the Salt Song album, and it's a great opener. The following "I Told Jesus" is a super slow and deeply moving gospel where Turrentine's soulful and bluesy tenor really holds sway. Not surprisingly, the title cut, which sits in the middle of the album is its true centerpiece, opening with Turrentine a capella and gradually building from there. "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" is as sumptuous a sax ballad as you're likely to find, and the original vinyl finishes with the Latin beat of "Storm." The CD reissue adds "Vera Cruz," a fun and fine tune, but if anything had to be left off for vinyl running time restrictions, this was probably the right choice. Overall, Salt Song makes a solid jump out of the hard bop foundation into contemporary stylings, but it's still a mighty fine album and, for me, essential Turrentine.
