They didn't give a fuck. Or no, that's wrong: they did, with Leigh Bowery still alive, they gave even birth, on stage. Yes, a part of them was stuck in a B-52's time capsule but the other part turned their tongue in cheek into something drastically different, still a tongue was involved, or several. It was the late coming to sound for the second wave of New Romantics, those from the Taboo Club 1985 (you might remember, Boy George created a musical around and about it). No wonder Lucien Freud liked to paint their enormous singer who wasn't enough into selling out and so refused a fashion design career in favour to leave it all up to Alexander McQueen - also one who's gone too early. A cold sun shone on vulnerable souls who refused to mention their vulnerability each time they open their mouth (we had Travis, Coldplay and Radiohead who brought that job to perfection in those days back then) but who preferred to provoke those who had already seen everything. It seems, they failed. But still some of the strange ones remember and shed a tear when listening to the song Momus wrote about their leader. One of them was a talented filmscore composer, by the way. And there was Nicola, with her voice of a plastic angel - who wouldn't have fallen for her?
