Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)

This artist is rated in the top 1% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 83.8/100, a mean average of 82.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.2/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 15.9.

To me, Yes encompass both the wondrous attention to detail and the overwhelming decadence that define Progressive Rock.

Another of my favorite prog bands of all time! They've undergone many many lineup changes but have consistently put out solid stuff for years.

one of the few artists on the site that is rated exactly where they belong - a top 100 group that did a lot for prog and 80s pop.....

Bill Bruford once called Yes a pop band - even in the context of their highly progressive 70s output - and you know what? He's kind of correct. Nobody - not even Genesis - could write a melody as catchy as a Yes tune and set it to an odd time signature or reprise it after cerebral instrumental sections that share more in common with Bach than Pop. Literal Baroque Pop here. Although their music grew ever more ambitious and creative until Tormato, they never lost that core sound - one that was firmly rooted in the lush melodies and harmonies of vocal groups like the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Bruford is a very insightful guy, even if his opinions are a little jarring at first.

Yes music is extremely transcendent sounding. Sort of like psychedelic rock but on a completely different level altogether.

Hearing Roundabout was one of a handful of moments in my life where I felt a whole new world of music had opened up to me that I didn't know existed. I dived so deeply into Yes' classic material and in retrospect, maybe got a bit too into the pretentious/cringy side of their music. I still can't till if albums like Tales or Relayer are overblown and pretentious or just take time to absorb and appreciate. Either way, I still love them both. If Yes wanted to secure a solid legacy they should've stopped at Drama imo, but because they got progressively worse I can't give them full marks.

Unlike most prog bands, Yes were never (well, rarely) pretentious, and while most prog bands were ambitious, Yes were far more successful in their ambition, creating the most incredible, groundbreaking and beautiful music of their time. Sure, the lyrics are sometimes indecipherable, and the 20+ min runtimes won't be for all, but there's no denying that they truly created some of the greatest music ever made - including, in my opinion, the greatest piece of music ever with Close to the Edge. Don't write them off as a pretentious 70s oldies group - you would be severely mistaken.
