Love, lust, loss, death, pain, suffering, uncertainty, attachment and, most of all, a macabre distaste for everything. A proper home for it might be French existential cafes in purgatory. I have yet to find someone who isn't repulsed by this thing (including singer/writer/guitarist Nicolaides himself! Wow, he hates it!) and yet I think it's one of the most emotionally revealing albums ever recorded. I guess sometimes you just have to be thankful for when art falls out of an unsuspecting person and you can capture it in a butterfly jar [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

I never thought when I moved to LA that I would see more of the Doors in the city than any other. The key difference is while other bands were tourists, the Doors knew what motivated its back alleys and barrooms, this peculiarly bohemian California culture that is oh so different from the East Coast version. Take me to the next whiskey bar, or maybe one of the ten high-end ones owned by the same company and filled with old rifles and maps of New Orleans. It's all here. When this album was first released, I literally couldn't stop listening, playing it maybe three times a day. It felt like this was music that God never intended us to hear, but we found anyway, "the tree of knowledge." This noir-ish examination of the continuing ills of schemish city politics and racial hatred is complemented by a profound sense of the unique cultural heritage that has met this oppression. Yes, it's unfocused at times, but still a masterpiece for the ages. [First added to this chart: 03/16/2015]

One of the best metal albums ever, largely because of it's perfect mix of slow, bluesy ballads ("Burn It Down), ferocious riffs ("Metalingus"), and anthems ("Down to My Last"). Kennedy channels Jeff Buckley in some of the most inspirational music put to record. [First added to this chart: 01/14/2015]

Nostalgic, even "homely", music that is best enjoyed fireside. Why do thoughts and feelings feel all the richer when they orginate in improvisation? [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Hugely influential to lounge music, and best enjoyed with eyes shut. The musical tones literally feel like a color pallette. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Lost in a maze of neon lights, this new impressionistic manifesto is rigorous in its sonic perfectonism, but much like pointilism, by doing so captures the richness of the environment all the better. The beautiful Who-style grandeur of "Guiding Light" caps it off. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Bluesy jazz that captures the cosmopolitan city while simultaneously being extremely experimental with sound texture and color. Also just a joy to listen to. This will make you instantly happy. Heck, what more than you need? [First added to this chart: 02/21/2015]

Terry Kath delivers a guitar performance equivalent in passion to his vocal performance on Chicago II. It's Robert Lamm who takes the helm in that category, singing elegant and impassioned love songs that adapts the hippie ideology to the writers and bohemians of New York's (and maybe Chicago's) parks. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 89.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

I really like to see some love for Hendrix, he seems to be a bit overlooked on this site... but well, that includes me actually.

I love how you aren't entirely skewed towards old or new music on this chart, I find that fairly rare on this site

So much brilliant effort put into this chart!! Your notes are extensive and personal (especially those for Illinois!), and though looking at the first couple of picks I got worried that I'd find things a little too classic-rock orientated, the smattering of jazz and hip hop provided a refreshing change from the rest of your picks. Well done!

Quadrophenia rules! So does Superunknown. Lots of good choices here. Glad to see someone else appreciates There is Nothing Left to Lose.
