Arcade Fire soon became the forefront of Indie Pop Rock and through the past decade released some of the most important LPs in modern music. We've all shared moments with at least one of these records, we all have memories of when Arcade Fire somehow managed to build a soundtrack to our lives, and maybe we still cling onto Arcade Fire as the artists that will always provide us with these moments of connection. That was 9 years ago. Even The Beatles didn't have that much juice left in them after a decade of work, and Arcade Fire are in a trickier position - modern music is demanding, pushing for constant innovation in an industry where innovation is found in the strangest of places. 'Reflektor' is the sound of a band losing it's grip, it's the sound of a band trying to remain contemporary. The songs aren't longer because Arcade Fire have too much inspiration, they're longer because it makes it seem like they're more confident in their song writing. The change in sound isn't innovation, it's a response to having worn out everything they've done before. Downvote me all you want, but Reflektor is an average record. It breaks no new boundaries and doesn't sound unique - neither did their older records (which I love, I'd like to add) but this one is devoid of the poignancy, the charm, the relevancy of what they've made before. But that's okay, we can't expect any artist to keep up with their own fame forever. Let go of Arcade Fire, they are not the saviors of music, they are not the only ones who can create meaningful albums. It's 2013, and there's many artists doing exactly what Arcade Fire were doing in 2004, creating responsive and powerful new music - don't try and find that here. This is the end of an age. Let's raise a glass to the upcoming musicians who are making fresh and exciting music. They need our support." Reply
