When Lou Barlow left (or maybe better was thrown out of) Dinosaur Jr he formed Sebadoh. While J Mascis was certainly the best guitar player of the two, Lou was definitely the best song writer of the two as this band has proven over and over and is one of my favorite bands ever.
The CD I most cherish is in fact a compilation of the ep "Rocking the Forest" (which contains fantastic tracks like "Gimme Indie Rock" and "It's so Hard to Fall in Love") and "Sebadoh vs Helmet" not in the least because it contains one of my favorite songs "Brand New Love". I have seen Sebadoh a few times live but I have never seen him play a version of this song live which I regret a little. The way this songs sets of very slowly and the way it ends in absolute chaos is beyond words.
This album is the quintessential indie album to me and is my absolute favorite. It has a very rough feeling to it but it's so honest it almost makes you cry. Of the latter album most of other tracks are also not less than fantastic, eg the duo Mean "Distance" (again slow beginning erupting in chaos) and "...Burned" (slow start going over in beautiful guitar part).

Although Zen Arcade had more points in this list because of the sheer vastness of the number of tracks, I tend to prefer this album for a reason I can't immediately give (although when I look back at the many tracks I like from this album...). Check out the KEFX performance on youtube where he plays three songs from this album of which a fantastic version of the title track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dSm57OMnV0
In any case I like everything from this band from the earlier punk songs to the more elaborate pop songs on their latter album. I know it's maybe a bit exaggerated but to me Bob Mould and Grant Hart are the Lennon/McCartney of the indie scene. Their hard edged tracks always had a melodic and adventurous side to them.

One of the first newly issued CD's I bought when I bought my first CD player in the beginning of 1989 was "Doolittle" by the Pixies and it was a real discovery for me because I hadn't heard of Husker Du or Sonic Youth or other indie bands at the time yet.
A bit after that I bought the CD reissue of "Surfer Rosa" which also included the EP "Come On Pilgrim" and I liked this album even better because and all the 22 tracks had an immediate appeal and a bonus: it contained a few tracks sung (Gigantic) or co-sung (River Euphrates) or with some sexy spoken comments (I'm Amazed) by Kim Deal (Gigantic), a real indie heroin apart from the other Kim of Sonic Youth.
