Weezer is a joke, which makes me extremely sad, because when they were at their peak, they were one of the best bands on the planet (in my opinion, of course). They're my favorite band even though they've put out one, count 'em, ONE, album I like since this one (White Album), and it took them 20 years to do it. Life as a Weezer fan isn't easy, it's a lot of disappointment, followed by a slight glimmer of hope, followed by crushing disappointment, and while it's safe to say by now that they're never going to regain their mid-90s mojo, they don't need to, because we have this. I heard Pinkerton for the first time when I was about 14 or 15 years old, crushing on a girl that I thought was probably a lesbian, could you guess what my favorite song was??? Obviously, I loved Pinkerton immediately. At that time in my life, this album felt like it was made for me. It wasn't just the lyrics that won me over though, Weezer gave this a raw edge that hasn't lost any of its brashness over time, without sacrificing melody or great songwriting. It's consistently biting, depressing, bitter, and sometimes honest to a fault, but that's what I love about it, It's an album that shouldn't work, hell probably shouldn't even exist, but it does, and boy am I glad that it does. There are 10 songs here and there is not one that I would even think about skipping, and even at it's "worst" (El Scorcho), It's still fun, charming, and impossibly relatable.

Ambition is a funny thing. Sometimes, it can result in a band pushing themselves too far and creating a directionless mess of an album, or, it can result in a band creating something truly special, Yes made something truly special with this one. Yes (and almost every prog band) get criticized for their music being too "pretentious" , but it seems like no one can ever explain why its pretentious. People like to use song length as a reason, but bands like GYBE! (who I love to death also) have PLENTY of 20+ minute songs in their discography, yet they rarely ever catch the same kind of crap Yes does on a consistent basis. I do agree that they went a little too far with albums like TFTO, but in 1972, they hit the nail on the head. When listening to Close To The Edge, it sounds like the band is all in. No corners were cut. Not one second of this album feels half-assed, they've taken everything that they've learned by this point in their career and used it only when it is needed. The compositions are next level, the playing is unmatched, and the production is somehow raw but clear at the same time. Close To The Edge creates an atmosphere that is complete magic (for lack of a better term), it puts me in a dream-like state that only this album can (listen to the end of the title track and you'll see what I mean). Now, since I've been raving about this album so much you're probably wondering why it's not higher, that's because I don't see it as a perfect album, especially when compared to the albums above it. There are moments like the AHHHHS in the intro of the title track that come of as a little cheesy to me, not very many, but enough to knock it down just a little bit. Also, I think that the first two songs set such an unbelievably high standard that even though Siberian Khatru is a great song, it sounds a little weak comparatively. All in all, as a complete experience, Close To The Edge is hard to beat. It's an album that's stature seems to keep on growing, even 50 years after it's release, and that serves as a testament to this records greatness, and just how timeless it's shown itself to be.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 17% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.2/100, a mean average of 88.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.
