Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s by

Re-evaluated the 90s. Listened to 229 albums all in about a month's time.
My own complaint about this chart is it is artist dense... but hell... that's my opinion of the decade. I'd rather listen to 5 Smashing Pumpkins albums before I listen to Pavement albums.
Part of me says limit the artist density to top 2 or something and then part of me says, dude, why would you not include a rated 90 album and replace it with a rated 80 album just to appease the wankers?

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.1/100, a mean average of 85.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.5.

Defiantly rejects the golden standards and "Pitchfork canon" for better or worse. At the very least it admits your own personality, though unfortunately it doesn't speak to me all that much beyond a dozen or so choices.

Thanks for all the recommendations. However, many if not all of those albums are omissions from my list on purpose. If I wanted to mimic pitchfork or something then I'd be wasting my time. Having said that I'm very interested in recs that not in the top 100 of the 90's here on BEA. But no, I don't need Spiderland on my chart.

Really great chart! Love loads of the picks (especially Ágætis Byrjun at #2 - wow that album is good) though maybe a little too much emphasis on American alt-rock for my liking. Here's a few of my faves from outside the US that hopefully you might enjoy it you haven't heard already. Keep it up man!!
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Fishmans - Long Season
Susumu Yokota - Sakura
Oval - 94 Diskont
Autechre - Tri Repetae

Thanks for your input Peppa. I didn't down vote you, just to be clear. But I will say I can understand your perspective and I'm sure many will agree with you. I personally just like these albums better is all. While all the albums you listed are the best albums of the decade, I simply don't enjoy them as much. They aren't bad, but I couldn't put them on and listen to them every day for a week, that's all. Obviously I enjoyed them enough and maybe my placement could change if I assess the 90s again, but for now that was my assessment back in 2016.
Great chart 1/4 of his list is also on my list. only 2 records i really don't like and i know many do like both (Tragic Kingdom and Zooropa). Still this is a great chart could almost be a published chart of best albums of the 90's. Well done.
great chart !!

Thanks for your honest assessment of the decade rather than appeasing the wankers. Seriously, this is a kickass nineties chart, and I'm so glad you took the time to listen to so many albums and reassess them. That's a project I'd like to undertake myself sometime, which would give me an opportunity to listen to some of the material on your chart that I think deserves a fresh listen: The Carnival, for example, and Ágætis Byrjun. And of course, I like the places where our charts overlap; I love OK Computer (doesn't everyone?), Nevermind, Grace, and Dummy, for starters. Terrific chart!
Can't argue with #1

Fantastic. U2 heavy, Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M. too… I suggest you listen to Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, to round up that grunge big 4. Also, Tool's Aenima deserves a spot. I'll give you 90 for the 90s
don't care about the wankers (your words). if you don't have the albums you actually like on your best-of-list, what's the f*****g point? agree with lots on this one, but think RATM is overrated. very well played, arranged and produced and all that, but only one really good track on it.
