The canadian outfit's debut has been cemented as a modern classic, second only to Radiohead's 'Kid A' in Metacritics review of the past decade. The high praise is well deserved, and whilst the band has gone on to reach their widest audience since the release of their Third LP, 'The Suburbs,' their finest hour thusfar is shown in the 10 tracks on their debut LP. From the first notes of the piano on 'Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)' to Regine Chassagne's goosebump-inducing vocal performance on 'In The Backseat,' 'Funeral' gives the listener an album of 10 tracks the standard of which any band would hope to acheive, but only very few do. Win Butler of Arcade Fire stated that this album was the very reason why he and his band signed to Merge Records. Neutral Milk Hotels final album was released to mixed reviews but has since then gone on to be one of the defining albums of the late 1990's, with many proclaiming it to be up there with some of the best albums of all time. The first album anyone buys is always going to be held with a special regard, I'm lucky that I can call 'By The Way' my first musical purchase. Being a typical impatient kid, I was more inclined towards the singles, such as 'By The Way' and 'Can't Stop.' However, almost a decade later, the fact that 'By The Way' remains so highly regarded in my own humble opinion is testament to its quality. John Frusciante proves himself to be the Chili Peppers secret weapon, as is clear from the guitar playing in 'Can't Stop' and 'Venice Queen' in particular. His melodies subtle, but essential to the albums success. Whilst many love the band for their funk-rock roots, 'By The Way' marks a change in direction for the band ('Universally Speaking' is unashamedly Beatles-esque), but if the end result is an album that I still enjoy as much as I did 10 years ago then I can hardly consider that to be a bad thing. When people think of Radiohead, the albums that seem to come to mind most often are 'Ok, Computer' and 'Kid A,' whilst I enjoy these albums, I still consider 'Hail To The Thief' my favourite 'Radiohead' album and worthy of a place on this list. It seems that instead of creating their own brand of music once again, they wanted to make a statement with this album. Whilst many of the political albums of the 2000's were more subtle, Radiohead chose to make their opinion clear, as Thom Yorke states in an interview with the NME, it's theme is "a general fear of the future, that it's being jeopardised, that it's difficult to do very much about, because things have been set in motion that seem unstoppable." Many albums intended as a political statement can end up becoming patronising and can be a risk for any band to pull off. However, a year before Green Day's 'American Idiot,' Radiohead showed that it could be done, to dazzling effect. [First added to this chart: 04/08/2012]

I am, no doubt, one of the many who found out about The Shins through Zach Braff's fantastic film, 'Garden State.' Whilst they still remain criminally overlooked by many, there were no doubt many who were annoyed at those who, like me, jumped on the bandwagon after hearing the songs 'Caring Is Creepy' and 'New Slang,' the latter of which might well be one of my favorite songs of all time. When listening to their 2001 debut, I often wonder how it took me so long to discover James Mercer and his music. The album is a love letter harking back to acts such as The Beach Boys, The Beatles and would be at home if its release date came about in the mid-60's or 70's. It is testament to Mercer's songwriting ability that you can never really predict what direction the songs on the album will take, an all too rare quality in music nowadays. The opening notes of 'Seven Nation Army' are one of the few musical moments that you can play to anyone and they'll recognise it. The White Stripes fourth album marked a peak in the Garage Rock Revial of the early 2000's that gave rise to bands like The Strokes. Meg and Jack White are a brilliant compliment to one another as musicians, and whilst critics speak of an uneven distribution of talent between the two, it is impossible to imagine one without the other. Elephant is 50 minutes of two musicians perfectly suited for one another doing what they do best. Jack White in a recent interview with NME says that he "really misses" being a part of the White Stripes. When I listen to the album, I understand why. [First added to this chart: 04/08/2012]

If ever I ended up in a log cabin alone for 3 months, I can only wish I could be this productive in that time. Justin Vernon's time alone in the wild has led to one of the best so-called 'break-up' albums of the last decade. The emotions conveyed through Vernons distinctive voice and music take the listener on a journey, with Vernon as the guide along the way. The entire album clocks in at a little over half an hours worth of music, but in that time, we are given a whirlwind tour of the breakdown of a relationship and the fallout from it. I don't know who Emma is, but as the inspiration in writing this album, I cannot help but feel a little bit thankful. [First added to this chart: 04/08/2012]

Whilst the Monkeys debut is the album that gathered the critical praise and superior sales to their second LP. I favour their follow-up more. The shadow of their first offering was always going to hang over the writing of 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' and to come out the other side with as good an album is testament to Alex Turner and indeed the rest of the band's ability as musicians. Turner himself describes the album as "more full-on" than their debut. Tracks like Brianstorm, Teddy Picker and 505 have become stables for the band to play on tour and were particular highlights for myself when seeing the band in 2009. It is an overlooked album, but one that I enjoy immensely and feel is worthy of a place on this list [First added to this chart: 04/08/2012]
